The age of consent in Florida is 18, but close in age exemptions exist. By law, the exception permits a person 23 years of age or younger to engage in legal sexual activity with a minor aged 16 or 17.
794.05 Unlawful sexual activity with certain minors.-- (1) A person 24 years of age or older who engages in sexual activity with a person 16 or 17 years of age commits a felony of the second degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082, s. 775.083, or s. 775.084. As used in this section, "sexual activity" means oral, anal, or vaginal penetration by, or union with, the sexual organ of another; however, sexual activity does not include an act done for a bona fide medical purpose Florida code, Title XLVI, Chapter 794

Seems like a whole lot more information than needed!

The following is a map showing the locations of the 72 sex offenders within a 5 mile radius of LSL. Quite a few are Villages residents.

What Village do you live in?

I don't even know where Alabama is, don't do the middle.

I don't live in TV yet, the home I own is in Palo Alto. Why?

At one of the POA meetings a few year back one of the members complained that a sex offender rented a house next to hers. She complained the sex offender moved and the owner rented to another sex offender.

so I am wondering how many of the sex offenders in The villages rent or own property?

I am also wondering how many of the owners actually live in The villages or simply buy up property here and rent it out?

This is a concern to me because it seems that anything of this nature receives unfair and unnecessary coverage from newspapers outside The Villages, etc Consider the hyperbole concerning STD's, swinger clubs

Family Watchdog is good for mapping and showing the convictions, mug shots etc. of the offenders. The crime stats are also there to see the rate per x-number of population, for various levels and types of crime.

Once the map is up showing the addresses of offenders, the menu bar across the top of the map has a choice for showing the names and addresses in a list that is easier to read data on quickly.

First there are people willing and waiting to take advantage of others in every community, no place is 100% safe. Second I'm not sure of the Florida laws but in many states if you pee outside and get caught you have to register as a sex offender

Very good points. As to finding out whether they rent or own, you can find the names on the list at the county website, and you can also find the owner of any property on the county website.
As for renting, I do rent my home out at times and fortunately I have resources that many do not. As a private investigator, I am able to do background checks on anyone that I rent to. I do not rent to sex offenders, nor do I rent to anyone whose background does not make me comfortable having them in my home.

Do you advise the potential renters of the background check?

I'm glad you posted that. I first found the sex offender list several years ago when we began our research of The Villages. I was a bit shocked at the time that so many of them would want to live with a bunch of older retirees........but I guess sex offenders age , just like the rest of us.

The "news" was kind of downplayed as I recall.......

I also checked out our state......and there are many more in TV than in the towns I checked out.

Why would I care? Well, for one, we would have young grandchildren visiting....ages "baby", two years old, eight years old, eleven years old and now the eldest is nineteen years old........all girls except for the eleven year old boy.

Just being safe, rather than sorry. I would not buy in a neighborhood with registered sex offenders.........that's for sure.

Especially how the postings of that "pole dancing" motel room bedroom for rent, posted on TOTV, was shown........and then suddenly POOF it disappeared. They are out there. Very weird....to say the least.

Maybe we've been sheltered, although our town is changing as well, but again, thanks for posting...........people should be aware.

Funny........for sure. However, back when I checked out the list, they actually named the sex act they had been busted for.....so probably if we look now, it should name their crime.

I doubt if these are teens caught sexting on their I-phones, but sleezy old guys........and maybe some middle aged guys as well, if my memory holds.

And you buy where there are no sex offenders.............then one moves in accross the street. What do you do then?

I don't have to. Everything I look up is public record. But it sure is helpful to know if a person who wants to rent my house has a history of suing people, or being sued for property damage.

Makes sense.
