Morse & San Marino

There is a "Yield" sign ahead of the turn, but it is a jumble of pictograms which may confuse a non-resident - by the time they have deciphered the message it's too late

YES to your comment about the "Yeild" sign. That was my husband and me in the car. We are always so careful there. We live in the neighborhood so that was not our only time making that turn. I am so sorry for the man in the cart. I can still see him falling out of his cart and thinking that he was going to hit his head or the cart was going to roll over on him. Hopefully his injuries were not any worse than he said. I have been on the phone half of today trying to find out who to contact about the marking of this intersection

I just hate the way Morse is laid out for the golf carts and cars......so confusing and dangerous. The road is VERY busy. I think there needs to be some serious changes to improve safety on that road!

Nothing wrong with how Morse is with their lanes for golf carts and cars. Carts just have to stay in the cart lane. If they are going to turn left on San Marino, signal with both turn signal and arm, look to see if the lane is clear and move to the left turn lane. Do not turn left from the cart lane!

The cart drivers also have to remember if they are not street legal, the speed limit is 20. If they are street legal, speed limit is 25 and they should not be in the cart lane.

Pay attention to what is going on and try to anticipate actions by other drivers and you will be just fine. Remember that a large percentage of the drivers of both cars and carts are from New York! Be careful!

I was on Morse in that area yesterday and observed a car that was half in the car lane and half in the cart lane in anticipation of turning right. Problem was another car was turning left two cars ahead of him so traffic was at a stand still. Normal except the golf carts were at a stand still also because he had the cart lane blocked. So I disagree with pulling over into the cart lane to turn right.

He said, “I pull into the cart lane so the carts can not pass me when I am making a right turn. The carts have the right of way but you can enter the lane because it is defined by a white line not a yellow line”. After that explanation and my concerns being put to rest, I was about to walk out the door I then decided to share my thoughts about round-d-rounds with the Sheriff, for that I got a pamphlet with colored diagrams. In my mind a round-d-round should be one lane but then what do I know.

So bottom line duffysmom the Sheriff agrees with you as do I.

Interesting - where I come from it's illegal to cross a solid WHITE line, whereas you can cross a yellow line as that's considered a warning, just like a white (speed limit) or yellow (hill etc) road sign. Nevertheless, moving into the cart lane would seem the prudent way to go.

Something like this happened to me last week in Hadley. I came thru the Hadley gate and ahead was a golf cart. The driver seemed to be jerking his cart unsure of whether to stay in the golf cart lane or jump ahead of me.

As I started to speed up to pass him he jumped in front of me taking an abrupt left hand turn a few feet later into the Hadley pool area . He did not use his blinker and there was no one behind me forcing me to hit my brakes and to ride his bumper for a few feet.

Good thing my radio was up and the music was loud because I wasn't able to hear him scream at me judging from his face as he was looking back while turning. His mouth was going and face contorted but I couldn't hear him. I'm thinking you have to be kidding me. You're screaming at me?

March POA Meeting

You protect yourself and more importantly the golf cart. Isn't' that really what's important?

Lt. Nehemiah Wolfe, Sumter County Sherriff's Office was the guest speaker last evening at the March POA meeting. He covered crime and traffic issues in the Villages. One of his comments validated my earlier post. I believe I'm quoting him accurately. "If a motorist was planning to turn right, neither I, nor one of the deputies would give a motorist a citation if within 50-75 feet before an intersection, after checking to make sure that it was safe to do so, pulled into the golf cart lane either partially or totally to block a golf cart from coming up into your blind spot...There's nothing in FL statutes that says this, but it's just plain common sense to avoid an accident where a golf cart might pass a vehicle on the right." He also said in another comment that by FL statute golf carts traveling in their lane going straight would have priority over a vehicle making a right turn. Again, he said use common sense. Do you want to be safe or dead right?

Lt. Wolfe was both entertaining and instructive in his remarks.

Thanks Downeaster, but the only reference on p. 45 that I see relevant is

Solid White Line

A solid white line marks the right edge of the roadway or
separates lanes of traffic moving in the same direction. You
may travel in the same direction on both sides of this line,
but you should not cross the line unless you must do so to
avoid a hazard.

Is this the point you're making?
