Thanks Everybody, for your quick responses. I have an appointment for A/C people to come out on Thursday afternoon.

If it's the capacitor ask the repair guy for the model number and watch how he installs it. Order the capacitor on line and next time your A/C goes out fix it yourself for a lot less.

That's what I was told by the repair guy who had to replace mine twice in 11 months. He said it is caused by the power company's voltage issues.

Thursday afternoon???? It's 93* right now with a heat index of 107* WOW! Hope that was your idea not theirs.

He mentioned a home watch person, so I don't think anyone's having to live there in the heat.

In case icing is a problem turn the unit off for a few hours and back on when the sun goes down. That may help get you to Thursday. Won't solve your problem in the long run.

Interesting. Thanks for the tip. Would like to do this, but it will be my Homewatch person letting him in. But I guess it will happen again, based on the reports here. I will watch then.

Thanks to all of you who had suggestions. It took Speedy Air of Fruitland Park 2 hours to fix it this afternoon. Turned out to be both a capacitor & Freon. They said it "took 2 pounds of Freon." It was covered under my home warranty. Whew! Paula

If it required refrigerant then you may have a leak. The other possibilities are the unit was previously undercharged or the tech just overcharged it. Did they look for a leak with an electronic "wand" that will detect refrigerant?

Yep, put gas in it didn't work so toss a capacitor in it, worked. Or maybe the other way around ? No difference, the customer always pays.

It simply might be your drain is plugged. Please let us know what was found.

No, that is not how it works. If the start capacitor is bad the compressor won't start. You can't check the pressures, and know whether it needs refrigerant, without the compressor running. I believe the poster said it was covered under warranty. Regardless, whenever refrigerant is added the tech should also check for a leak. 2 lbs of refrigerant is a pretty good percentage of the total amount of refrigerant in the system.

Thanks, I was not there for service call. Still in Ohio. I read up on Freon & leaks after the service guy left. I'm sure he didn't check for a leak. So I will have to work on this when I get back to Florida. Thanks for you advice.

You post your AC is 2007. If, that is correct, the normal factory warranty on Carrier, which is what we have is five years. If, yours is under any warranty it was sold to you by someone other than the manufacturer. Normal average expected life for an AC in FLORIDA is about ten years. An off the cuff guess is your 2007 AC was ORIGINALLY rated at a SEER of 7. Today they are MINIMUM about 15. The efficiency goes down as the unit gets older. If, you need to choose between an expensive repair or replacement the recovery due to electricity savings will not be as long as you might think.

You mentioned Homewatch, we've used them in the past and found them to be dedicated-we were happy. You might call them and see if they will double check. Obviously, this is summer and it is very hot. Imagine how hot your attic is where the ac ducts run. So many things could be.

I'm sure you are not the only one to have this happen to.
I would not post when you will be back. I WOULD CALL HOMEWATCH-I'M SURE THEY CAN OFFER YOU ADVICE. Perhaps, they can coordinate with your repair guy. Reminder-if your repair guy comes over to take a look he will not have access to anything but the outside compressor unless HOMEWATCH or a friend or neighbor could help you out. As to friend or neighbor-if they do not have a key, assuming you are in the US, you can mail the key to them and have it delivered the next day at a cost of ????? about $18-priority mail. Regular priority mail will deliver it in two days at a cost of ???? $5.95
