We tape it and fast forward to awards. It’s entertainment (for us). Hope you enjoy.

We are retired and really don’t get a darn about those!

Frankly, if someone simply asks for information about an event that interests them, comments about how much you dislike that event doesn't really further the conversation. I actually agree the Oscars are pretty much worthless, but was trying to accommodate my wife (who wants to continue the tradition of the family doing something together), by seeing if there is anything organized for the event. It's actually a bit surprising how the "World's Friendliest Hometown" responded in some cases.

She looked around for any Villages-sponsored or -related Oscar events and didn't see any listed -- is anyone aware of anything happening? Thanks.

You can get youtube tv on roku and watch all the network..

Thanks, we've had YoutubeTV, and it's currently on pause for a few months (assuming we return to it) because we weren't really watching that many live TV shows (and were watching streaming). Being snowflakes for now, we don't plan to pay the $75/month for YT TV, but thank you very much for the suggestion.

People here like to throw in their opinions and often it does make the conversation more lively

The “World’s Friendliest Hometown” is friendly. Most of the people here are. When you are in trouble, see how people come to your aid. But that does not mean that they are push overs, or don’t have opinions, or will put up with just about anything. That would be doormats…. not friendliness.

I was wondering are people here really this bitter and angry as such a simple thing as an award show or are they just bored and being sarcastic? Some comments were just so horribly rude to such a simple question by the OP.

Are they cheaper by the dozen? I would trade for this beautiful bridge my wife bought me for my last birthday.

It's amazing how often when someone disagrees or gets offended with some opinions they pull out the "world's friendliest hometown” card.

You must have known bringing up a polarizing awards show was going to lead to some opinions.

Enjoy your Oscars.

I’m sorry you found out the hard way that America’s friendliest hometown isn’t represented here on TOTV with the exception of a few very kind and helpful people. The friendly villagers are out and about living their best retirement life at the rec centers, squares, walking paths, pools, etc. Hubs and I meet those people every day when out actively enjoying the lifestyle. Welcome! We love the Oscars and never miss them, and I’m so glad your wife found someone to accommodate her.

Thanks for the message. My wife's plan fell through but we ordered an antenna for over-the-air and that should hopefully work (we have one at home and use it for live TV). I hope you enjoy the show.

My daughter has a big fish tank with "OSCARS" in it. Never thought of having an "Oscar watching party." Hmmm, the things folks do for entertainment.

So now that it is finally Acadamy Awards day, what are your picks?

Best movie
Best Actor
Best Actress
etc

I hope "Killers of the Flower Moon" wins but expect it will be a very big night for "Oppenheimer".

It went about how it was expected to go but they were good about keeping them on a rather tight time schedule.

Has anyone seen all of the Best Picture nominees?
If not, how many did you see?

There was a time that I would see every Best Picture nominee. But that was long ago and there were only 5 movies nominated. This year, I haven’t even heard of most of the nominated movies.

Two of them but am working on getting to most of the other ones.

I did not watch, used to many years ago, then got fed up with the continual yapping. BUT I do like to see the clothes they are all wearing and found a site online that had the clothing for both men and women. Have to say this is the ugliest bunch of dresses I have seen in a long time, and all (make that most) of the very young men looked very effeminate - maybe this is the fashion nowadays.

I saw Killers of the Flower Moon and Oppenheimer. Not impressed with the latter. As someone who worked in Hollywood, I still don't understand how they choose the winners.

I'm afraid I need to disagree with you. I worked in Hollywood for over 20 years and they are a bunch of hard working, decent people. They don't deserve you negative criticism.

Dusty_Star 03-11-2024 12:46 PM

Tustin714, How did your new antenna work? Were you able to watch the Oscars? Was it a table top model?

I certainly agree with that. Of the movies up for best picture this year, I would have put Oppenheimer near the bottom of the Top Ten films. Hollywood has all kinds of people but most probably are very hardworking and who have a strong sense of right and wrong.

After paying $20 for Oppenheimer, I still haven't finished watching it. The first half was so boring that I fell asleep and I have
not gotten around to watching the rest of it.

So it was scheduled for delivery "up until 9pm" :) but arrived mid-afternoon -- it was not table top but the type with a large square receiver you can put in the window, or rest on the back of a couch. Anyway, it only drew in 5 channels (only Fox was a major channel), even though we tried it at both ends of the home (north and south) and facing east and west, to catch Orlando or northern transmitters. No luck.

So my wife started watching the Oscars unlocked channel by ABC, before I left to play trivia. When I returned she said the channel had shut off as the show started, so she let the internet keep her up date to date as she texted with the kids (all of whom filled out ballots in the attempt to win the traditional box of Raisinets :)).

In the end, our son who is traveling in Spain won, even though he was asleep during the show! Meanwhile, I recovered $3 of my $5 trivia fee (tied for 1st place, incredibly, until the last question), so that beat the Oscars! :)

Thanks for the update. Was wondering how you guys fared. If you guys are here in TV next year at the same time you might try to see if any neighbor’s are planning to watch and then ask if you can come over and bring something food or drinks, appetizers are always welcome. The neighborhood pool is a good place to start the conversation about any show. Anyways, that’s what I’d do.

MsPCGenius 03-11-2024 02:34 PM

Love me some John Cena

The parody on the streaker event was so damn funny. John Cena is some great eye candy! THAT was the best part of the show.

The only other thing that gained my interest were the clips from Poor Things. I will plan to see that movie...
