I would love something to open the gate on my smartphone instead of the card - along with a digitized Villages ID card on my smartphone, too! I love the idea that one poster mentioned - that of making the entry gates act like the exit gates: drive up, stop and then gain access.

It is available. We have one in our mirror and it works great

bpascani 03-16-2021 04:17 PM

I keep my window closed, hold my card right up to the window, so that the little dot reads it (the card), and the the gate opens. never get wet, hot, or cold!

Do they destroy your key card when doing this, or can they take info from it without wrecking it? (Don't you have to turn your key cards in when you sell your house?)

Two Bills 03-16-2021 04:58 PM

So that is what the little white card our landlord leaves out for us is for.
All these years we have just driven straight through, and got rid of that silly little arm that keeps slowing up the traffic!:icon_wink:

Why are you waving the card.....just hold it at the reader....that little light is the reader.

The ID on your smartphone is being developed and should be available shortly. I personally don't want to sit at a gate while drivers look for that app to open the gates.....could sit there for awhile.

Why the hurry? Most of us are retired, so we are not in that much of a hurry. In the last two weeks, I have witnessed several folks rushing through behind someone else when the gate is still up or on it's way down. Just a mess waiting to happen because folks are in such a hurry.

No, speed bumps suck unless they are super high. Keep the gates so the cameras get clear video of who is coming in.

j_vermilya 03-20-2021 08:38 AM

I know in fact they exist, a friend has one, uses is all the time, cost them about $35.00. Sorry, I haven't ask who made it..but watched it work so I know it's real

bobdeb 03-21-2021 08:41 AM

Some other 'gated' communities I know of use a bar code sticker attached to the passenger side rear window. It's scanned on entry, opens the gate, and records data as to who and when. Voila!

Mostly correct.
Doesn't record data, just checks a database for a known address.

Actually the one at my father's place did (well, I assume still does) exactly that and more. It kept a log with name, time and date (obviously it didn't see who was in the car) of entry and exit and a photo taken that could be matched. The sticker was non-removable. I always joked with my (at the time 90+ yr old) father he better be careful if he slipped out at 12AM for nefarious reasons. The log was available to the registered owner of the vehicle and the police with a warrant. Oh, they had the window sticker (without the computer database) back in the late 1980's and the new system around 2016 IIRC. Here in 2021 we're still waving our arms out the windows. :D While not a big deal by any means I think TPTB could afford some "luxury convenience" upgrades for the homeowners here.

I paid $35.00 and so worth it. No more rolling down windows. Just drive up close to reader and gate will automatically open.

While I think you may be "he" :) I am bumping an old thread because Mr Ingalls just did my vehicle (was $38 not $35 - inflation I guess but that's fine). I waited a couple months for my appointment and the big day finally arrived today. Mr Ingalls showed up right on time and took care of it in under 2 minutes. Now I am going to run around going through all the gates I can find. :) Ain't pure wanton & overly lavish luxury sweet! I figured all the money I saved over my lifetime by NOT smoking and only buying a 2/2 home instead of the $1.6million one I really wanted I could invest $38 in such luxury. :1rotfl:.

People will just loose that also.

Not unless they "lose" their car! :) They are often "permanently" attached, ie. not removable without rendering them unusable. Kind of like the optional "permanent sticker" you can get for Sunpass.

Tried our new toy today and it really wasn't that great. Did not work at all at 2 of the 6 gates we tried (and we pulled up literally inches from the receiver) yet when I took out my card and held it 18
away that worked. Seemed pretty finicky to the point of "if it's not 95% successful then we might as well stick with the card." YMMV of course. Bridgeport Lake Miona was a total fail (but maybe a special passport is needed to enter there!!!). :jester: :jester:

I get told this all the time:coolsmiley:, now I can say it, if you don’t like move.:icon_wink: only problem us complainer’s would be moving all the time, cause mostly like we can NEVER be pleased :)

There is a difference between a COMPLAINT and a suggestion via discussion on a FORUM MEANT TO TALK ABOUT THINGS IN THE VILLAGES (ie. TALK OF THE VILLAGES) to make things better (whether they are an important thing or just a "lifestyle" thing). Some folks get their enjoyment buying $90K cars or $million homes (or 6 $1/2million homes) and others just want to make something easier to do with making a small change or improvement. ;)

How close to the reader to you put your car? If you are more than a foot away it might not work. When I hold mine against the window it works 98% of the time....where it doesn't work is when the reader is higher or lower than standard.

Find a nerd who can determine the frequency/code and install a transmitter under your hood.

Only a bar code is easy to copy. Just walk up to anyone's car and use you phone to take a pic and use a printer to make your own sticker using that persons access, not secure at all.

Not possible with most systems.
Stickers are embedded with holograms that are not possible to copy.
Try it you'll see.

OK, who said anything about a barcode? RFID has been in use forever as exemplified by here. Besides, a barcode would NOT be visible by the gate if under the hood and wouldn't function. And, taking the other side, so what if someone copied a barcode here? LOL, SECURITY !!! Here ?? The gates are meaningless for anything but traffic control and not intended for SECURITY so even a barcode would suffice just for the convenience and the pure unmitigated luxury and freedom and convenience. The whole joint could use 1 barcode. Think of the savings!!! :clap2:

Our cards were new in March, most of the time does NOT work thru the window.

I'm no techno nerd. This has come up many times. I've read people saying their card works with the window closed-through the closed window. Either my card or my windows it does not work for me.

I laugh. The postal motto is something like rain, nor snow or?????? will stop the mail.
When, I was working i would regularly see mail delivery people hiding as I went about earning a living. Moral-I never learned to come in out of the rain nor snow snow nor gloom of night.

So those cameras that are recording every car and license plate going in or out of an area at the gates are not considered a security measure to you ? I forgot about the mugshot of the driver when they hit the red button too.

Car and both golf carts done the day after I called him...$39 each and works like a charm. So nice to be able to keep the window up when it is so hot or raining.

I have heard this many times, but it has never worked for me. If either of my gate cards isn't within about 3 or 4 inches of the sensor it won't work. Been that way since move in in 2013. Just my luck. At least I don't melt when it is raining.
