This may truly be the tragedy as reported but a lot of it doesn't ring true. Two men force the answered front door, lock the woman in a room and rob the house; and they also kill the dog for some reason during the process. Anything is possible but the report begs many questions.

No mention of a home invasion or burglary or battery.
Just a 911 call about a dead dog which is very sad; and a temporary security restriction at the villas.
I'm sure the details will surface at a time the Police feel it's appropriate.

graciegirl 08-14-2016 09:15 AM

I am still wondering what happened. Do you think the dog somehow got into the garage and the owner was unaware of it?

It has been very hot.

Keep Pets Safe in the Heat : The Humane Society of the United States

This is pure speculation on my part. But perhaps a reminder to be very careful of our pets in this heat, especially older ones is not amiss.

Again, I know nothing that would lead me to this thought.

CassieInVa 08-14-2016 02:00 PM

Well, I'm not sure why the Daily Sun would have quoted the police as saying it was a burglary/battery incident with animal cruelty, if it was a dog left in a garage. Also not sure why they would block off the street for something like that.

I sure wish that we could get some more details.

I do too, I wonder what was said on the 911 call.

It's only speculation, but with all these clouds it may rain.

Don't comment much, but so many times it amazes me that people really do think we live in a "bubble". Yes, crime is very low, but unfortunately, does happen around the country and the world. There are now how many people living here - well over 100,000!!! Are they all lovely, retired, happy people - probably not, but most of us are. We all came from somewhere else and truthfully, was where you lived whether 2,000 or a gazillion people - was there crime? More than likely yes, and all cities, towns etc. are next to other cities, towns, etc. that may have a bad element. So, bottom line, enjoy our lives here and just be aware that tho it is the best place we could be, it is still not Heaven, where everyone is perfect.

TheVillageChicken 08-14-2016 05:18 PM

This is a despicable incident and I don't mean to minimize or diminish it's importance, but did you realize that one our country clubs refuses to substitute tuna salad for chicken salad?

FLORIDA CRUELTY TO ANIMALS STATUTES

I hope they throw the book at these two perpetrators if this is true.

There is no doubt that bad things happen and crime is committed both on campus in The Villages and in the surrounding areas too, and I think we have two excellent ways to read about them; both the online news and The Daily Sun, the Sun being less explicit and doesn't name names as often as the online news.

There have been several incidents reported on this forum that ended up being rumor with very little based in fact. There was an incident reported here where a woman said there was a male intruder when she was in a shower at one of the sports pools. There was another about a home invasion with harm to an individual in Duval.

I read with just as much interest as the next person when I see someone has a mug shot in the online news. Usually if there is something of interest it gets reported in the news...and sometimes it brings world wide interest to us here, like the sex on the square debacle. It is when something is reported here and doesn't appear in the news or what appears in the news is "under investigation" that some think there is a "cover up" and others wonder if anything bad really happened.

At least, he/she did not mention the lobster bet.

Back to the subject.

If anyone has reliable information about the death of this dog and the burglary by the two(?) unknown as yet (?) suspects please post it.

I agree Gracie regarding the "news" reported in TV. Take the information in both the Daily Sun and the online reports with a large grain of salt! Rumors have always run rampant, but eventually sometimes the truth wins out.

Having this information since this afternoon, I hesitated to post it hoping it would come out from another source, but people need to be aware of what happened!

Village of Labelle. Knock on door, woman opened door, intruder pushed his way into home. Resident's dog was barking, so intruder took dog to garage and beat it to death.

Be alert! Be aware!

I'll tell you, I carry my 380 cal. in my pocket all the time & if someone barges in on me he's going to have a surprise because as soon as they're standing on my floor space I WILL put him down & I WILL make sure he doesn't leave the inside of my house, walking or crawling, this person will be be on my floor until the police arrive. Now our present govt. wants to take our guns from us so the brave ones don't have a chance to put one of these low life theives down. If we have to wait on the police you could be just like this dog. Sorry I got off on a hate yelling spree, but it just kills me to think the non gun people that have no idea what a gun is other than Joe Doe shoot someone. Police will be worthless by the time they get to your house. Joe Doe might be the intruder pushing his way into YOUR HOUSE!

Agreed. These homes, as built, have simple passage locks. You cannot lock someone in, you can only lock them out.

Of course, a homeowner can change the locks to an entry lock, but then the bad guys would have to know that they could lock her in. How many posters have changed a bedroom lock to an entry lock?

IMO, whatever horrid thing happened, it didn't happen as reported, and that is why we have no details.

Some of the less fortunate resort to drastic measures. Maybe the PO's should be doing a better job instead of taking kickbacks

Kickbacks ?

mysunshine1948 08-15-2016 10:01 AM

True

Yes, this happened at 1:30 in the afternoon. Husband golfing. 2 men with clipboards. They forced the woman into the garage, not the dog. The dog kept barking so they killed it. Soooo sad. They are tramatized! This was a villa. Do not open your doors unless you are sure you know who it is!

This is true. The husband was golfing. The woman opened the door. Two men with clipboards. They forced her into the garage, not the dog. The little fog kept barking, so they killed it. So sad. They only took a gun that was in a drawer and left.....probably scared. The woman is tramatized. This was a villa. 1:30 in the afternoon. I hate all these workmen everywhere! Awful!
Maybe security cameras need to be at entrances and pictures taken! The gates are a joke as many you do not need a card and you can just push a button and get in anyway.

Many of us, no, most of us were less fortunate than we are today and some were poor, they just didn't know it because everyone was, and that was not and is never an excuse for stealing stuff.

Here is your sheriff up in Marion County. A good fellow, I am told;

This was described by Law Enforcement as a Burglary...So maybe this poor soul came home to find things gone and her pup beaten to death? I would like to harm those people myself.

I found the thread referred to and think it's better to just post a link than misquote.

You hate workmen ? What makes you think men who work commit violent crimes ?

graciegirl 08-15-2016 10:59 AM

Here is what the name we cannot type news is saying as of today at this time;

The death of a dog in the Harlow Villas in the Village of LaBelle is being investigated by the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident occurred Thursday afternoon and prompted a temporary security restriction of the villas.

A 64-year-old woman made a 911 call prompting the arrival of law enforcement.

The investigation is ongoing.

ColdNoMore 08-15-2016 11:31 AM

So as the facts to date indicate (as much a dearth of them that there are), the headline(s) should read....

Doggone, woman OK.

This information was also given to me through a friend whose a friend of the woman. So sad and terrible it happened. I hope they catch the guys!!!! There have been break-ins in T.V. in the past, all were done during the day. Not sure what the back-story of this is re: the perps. They could have been workers, they could have been passing through as well. But it can happen anytime, anywhere. We had it happen in our "quiet" little town, up north. Found out it was students, ditching school---they did it even with the homeowners there (but in another part of the house). As for the gates...they're there NOT for security but to help regulate traffic. The folks who "man" them are there to answer questions and give directions.
