Default Best time of year to buy existing home

What is the best time of year to purchase an existing home. By best time year, I mean when are the most homes on the market resulting in the most choices?

For us it wasn't about the best time of year. We had specific ideas about what we wanted and I just checked the listings daily until we found exactly what we wanted.

I agree, the best time what's available that the buyer wants based on location and price.

The best time to buy? When you find the house you love.

The reason I am asking is that I plan on renting for a month or two to look at what is on the market. I was thinking there is data that shows number of houses on market by month.

People put up their home for sale at all times of the year for diverse reasons although in mid summer most snowbird buyers are not physically here. Know how much you want to spend and what you dream of and also what you would settle for. Personally, I don't fall in love with any home but spread a wide net at the price I want to spend, pick the best, start putting in offers one at a time, slightly low and see who bites and go from there. If you wait for the perfect season to buy, you could miss the fabulous house in front of you.

PS...do your own homework and also work with a recommended realtor. Check realtor.com, Zillow including Zillow FSBO, put enquiry on here but be as specific as you can, and speak to people in various neighborhoods as they know lots....and so on.

A true bargain is when you find the home you love and can afford the purchase. The only special time to buy is when your new home is placed on the market. Selling a home is a different story.

Default Far more complex than your question

Do you NEED to sell another home first?
Can you afford to carry two homes?
Are you willing to carry two homes?
Are you willing to essentially move twice?
As to getting a bargain-Homes are selling well. If, you have cash, you might be able to save a bit for someone that needs to get out quickly. Getting a mortgage, is something YOU should discuss with a financial advisor.
You may well find that you can buy tax free bonds and come out ahead on the still low mortgage rates.

Things you may not be thinking about-
Getting a mover close to xmas is difficult and will likely cost you more.
Also, the TAX CODE- is a huge unknown

It doesn't matter. There are always many homes for sale, new and pre-owned. People either move to a bigger/smaller house, move out of TV or go into assisted living or die.

Every time we see or hear an ambulance drive by we say "another home up for sale."

Buy it while you're on the right side of the grass--man makes plans & God laughs--time is way more precious than $$--a day you miss can never be recovered

I have a home I am selling and will rent it to you for a couple of months before selling if you are interested.

The best time is usually starting in May. People either use the home for the winter or rent it for those months and then sell. So you will find a higher number of homes coming on the market in May than most other months.

Send me a PM (private message) if you're interested in doing this.

I agree May thru June if you look at stats is biggest volume, sometimes because of a rental, or death, bigger or smaller. That said we bought in April, November, December. Sold one in December in 3 days

Here are some interesting numbers posted by Lyle Gant, an advertiser on this site, for the year 2016. This may be helpful.
