Default Beware "Local Records Office" Scam

We recently moved our deed into my wife's name. A few weeks later we received an "official looking" piece of mail from the "Local Records Office" located in Talahassee. They claim to provide

"a copy of the only document that identifies ... as the property owner of .... by a recently recorded transferred title of property"

I inserted the ... where they listed my wifes name and our adress.

They want $89 to provide a copy of the "deed" and a complete property profile.

If you read the fine print you see that they are not affiliated with the county nor any government agency. This offer is a solicitation for services and not a bill due although if you do not fully read all the information it looks like something you have to do.

Research on the web reveals this as a scam. Basically they are trying to sell you something you can get for free.

Always read carefully ALL of the fine print.

We recently closed on our home and have been bombarded with these offers. What a scam and it looks so official!

We closed two weeks ago today and so far have not been "hit" with this one. Thanks folks, I'll sure keep an eye out.

We received one after a name change on ownership of our home. It is very official looking and I would have paid it had I not remembered that our attorney had said she pays the charge when filing the papers.
