Does anyone have a good suggestion of how to keep a large blue heron from sitting on our birdcage and leaving a mess with his droppings? We have tried owls and snakes etc. but they don't work. He is destroying our furniture and floor beneath the cage with his droppings. We don't want to cover the top of the cage with a canvas because we love the open feeling of seeing the beautiful sky. Has anyone had bird spikes installed along the top of their cage and if so who installs them? Help!

We put up two owls with reflective eyes and that has reduced our problem to maybe twice a year from twice a month.

Hang some cds or dvds from a string across the top part of the bird cage.

Try the reflective tape they sell and hang it on your bird cage, or bushes near the cage.

We had the same problem. We tried owls and reflective tape with no luck. We called Florida wild life and they suggested a strobe light. We used several and it worked. We now have just one connected to the area of the cage the blue heron mostly used to perch on and pointed it upward. I have it connected with an extension cord to a timer and it stays blinking throughout the night. Thankfully this has worked - but I’m hesitant to discontinue using the light.

A owl worked for us in keeping birds from flying into our courtyard but the space to get in is rather small.
I think years ago we had a problem with birds on the roof of an office building. I think we put up an eagle on the roof and that worked.

Had the same problem with birds in a covered dock. The birds would paint the boat with something I wouldn't buy at Home Depot. The owl worked great for a couple of weeks until the birds realized the owl hadn't moved. I began to move it every other week and the birds disappeared. I've since used the owl to keep the birds away from building nests in my wife's door wreaths and other desirable bird sanctuaries around the house. Just keep in mind that the birds will realize if the owl hasn't moved for a couple of weeks, maybe something isn't quite right.

Try a Mylar balloon beneath where he roosts. We found it tends to scare them away.

Movement, flashing lights, noise all make birds uncomfortable.

Inexpensive idea that works well. You cut strips of mylar gift wrap-that silver plastic stuff. You put about 20 or so strips together making something like a pom pom girls what ever it is called. Any slight breeze will case it to flutter, flash light, make noise your bird will move out. OH-don't give him my address
