The police have made it clear that they will not enforce speed limits in The Villages. Maybe the affected community members need to take independent action. One suggestion is to organize “rolling blockades” on both Morse and Buena Vista. 2-4 cars driving exactly the speed limit n formation that blocks passing. The speed limit on Morse north of 466 is 30 mph. All of Buena Vista and Morse south of 466 is 35 mph. A handful of volunteers could accomplish what the police are refusing to do.

I don’t understand what this would accomplish. Sure, for the time these blockades are on the road the traffic behind them will be going the speed limit. But what about the traffic in front of them? What about the traffic on the bypasses? How do you find enough volunteers to run this 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You understand as soon as one car of the blockade pulls off all traffic goes back to normal. It will annoy people. I can’t imagine anyone would run into this and think “hey, I’ll start driving the speed limit.”

I don’t have a problem with people driving the speed limit or slower. I fine with people are driving the speed they are comfortable driving. And I am confident that there is no way I can control how other people drive. I like to drive assuming everyone drives like my late grandfather. If they do better I find it a lovely surprise.

In which case you could be cited for obstructing traffic and failure to move right when another vehicle wants to pass you. And here's a side question----who appointed you the enforcer of speed limits??????

I’ve noticed since moving here how many people flaunt speed limits — and I’m talking 20-30 even more mph over limit. I’m sure it happens, but I have yet to see any motorists pulled over by police. Police presence would be a major deterrent to speeders. Also, it would be a financial windfall for the counties if they got strict with ticketing speeders.

Bad idea, for more reasons than I care to expand upon.

Let's face it, it's spring, the racing season in Florida. Maybe he national movement to de-fend the police hit here also ? Not enough to keep serious crime down, so no one available to stop the madness (yes, everyday it's nearly unbelievable on all the major arteries, but B.V. REALLY stands out !) One thing I did notice, many speeding and reckless vehicles seem to be driven by service people of every description, from window treatments, decorative blinds, to lawn mowing, appliance repair, furniture delivery people who REGULARLY use BOTH the vehicle AND golf cart lanes... seen them almost hit so many people in golf carts I lost count... and they don't even look back in the side view mirror ! It is truly out of hand here !

Completely agree ! It's amazing to see what is tolerated. I feel that even going 40 is dangerous the way people squeal out, "gunning" it, running right up on your bumper even when you are going 5 mph OVER the limit, they are angry, very very angry. If someone is poking along, going 20 mph, I can understand how that can be frustrating and dangerous, but really, the anger show to those of us "only" going 5 mph OVER the limit is amazing !

Unfortunately, most of the real "crazies", in the huge trucks, vans, many with tandem trailers LOADED with equipment, literally bouncing up and down like it's going to fly off the double trailers, and the most frightening part... at the high rate of speed they drive, the trailers just swerve back and forth crossing the center line AND the line defining the GOLF CART LANE. I have yet in 18 YEARS seen any of these people pulled over and getting a ticket. I have seen passenger cars, presumably residents, pulled over twice in all those years. Once near the Savannah center, one time near the polo fields... what are the odds that one would only see two people getting tickets in a known "expressway/racetrack, in all those years ! During my career, I saw people getting tickets DAILY on my way to and from work in a medium sized community ! Maybe we need to fund the police (increase) so a few can be assigned to traffic ?

You've got that correct ! When we built here very VERY few people from large metro areas of any state, it was really rare to meet folks from major metro areas, but.... I always thought those of us from somewhat rural areas were MORE accustomed to going to going as fast as we pleased due to lack of traffic and long stretches where state troopers were highly unlikely to be assigned. You made me re-think that, maybe large metro dwellers are used to speeding. Off topic.... driving into the "big city" was quite a thrill.. A ballgame and George Diamond's on Wabash for a charcoal grilled filet, the most expensive on he menu... $5 or $6, or about the price of ONE HALF a pound of hamburger today. Ain't inflation great ?

Probably the same entity that allows you to drive however fast you want. Those are safety statutes. I consider it community service. How do you justify yourself?
