Oh, just Oh

When DW and I were doing our due diligence and visiting multiple retirement communities in both Florida and Arizona one factor we felt very important was whether the people we met, and saw on the streets, seemed happy. It was a question we directly asked when joining others floating in the swimming pool. Some seemed amused by the question until we made it clear we were asking about the community not their marriage or other personal concerns. We chose TV in large part because people here were overwhelmingly pleased with the choice they had made. Everyone had some complaint but the positives completely outweighed the negative.

A total stranger has now posted saying he is hearing us complain too much. I think it is a valid observation in isolation. TOTV is where we go with our complaints and concerns and our questions. Don't shoot the messenger. And he is right that if no one wants to be here, our home values do decline. We understand that TOTV is not an arm of the Morses' sales empire. There is no need to attack saying we wouldn't want him here if he makes an observation honestly expressed. So Hutch, come down, meet the natives, ask us questions about what we like and dislike, and ignore those who have only negatives as they haven't moved elsewhere have they. Some people just like to complain.

OK, so here is one more person you won't have to put up with, me. Good for you! I won't be buying your house either. For your sake, I hope there aren't many more like me.

.... First, as to Hutch. Don't know him, don't recall seeing a post from him. BUT, he is obviously disappointed. He is expressing that concern. What does he get? Other than a couple of reasonable comments, he's told to take a hike and not look back. Funny attitude that I've read here before in the short time I've been a member.

Hutch's post wasn't just expressing a concern. It was negatively worded. Some members answered in the same vein, understandably so. Others took a different approach, and patiently tried to explain the attractions of TV.

I wish Hutch well in his search for perfection.

Of course that's balanced by what sounds to me like a really nice place to retire. (and of course I'd never decide to avoid it without actually coming to visit which we plan this summer) But it is nevertheless scary, at least to me.......

....What I mean by this is that many times when someone raises a negative that they are concerned about people don't address the negative, but instead just tell people it doesn't matter. Like, "snakes are more afraid of you than you are of them." I assure you, no snake is as afraid of humans as those of us that have an irrational fear of them. It isn't really helpful to just tell people to ignore things they are concerned about....

OldDave, nobody has a more irrational fear of snakes more than I do, and I can tell you that in three years, I have never seen one here....not even a dead one. All I've seen was a piece of a molten skin on a golf course, and that was three years ago. There are some areas more prone to have them, such as near the marsh area just north of 466. But for the most part, the dense housing and construction and streets with lots of golf carts and cars scare them away. I'm always on the alert when I'm out walking, and I haven't even seen a snake dart away from there and into the bushes/grasses.

And by the way, maybe "irrational fear of snakes" is not so irrational. Satan himself is depicted as a "snake" and "serpent" in both the first and last books of the Bible. That imagery has meaning for us....to stay AWAY from them!

They do have a vital function in the ecology of things, (eating mice etc.) but we don't see them, much less interact with them. We do put the garage door down at ALL times.

I'm sorry, but I need to ask this. (not at Hutch) Do many people only read the original posts of threads? Hutch came back on at 12:37 this morning and posted message #16 that told us that we are right, as noted in the highlighted sentence above. Yet several posters continued to voice their opinions about the initial decision to cancel the LSV like post #16 doesn't exist. I've seen this kind of responding several time in the past, but I've thought little of it because I know I've accidentally done it myself. But this time it was so predominant here that I just had to say something. :ohdear:

Anyway, to Hutch... my opinion about your changing your mind is:clap2:!

I hope that you will find things to be other than what a few have said in other threads have led you to believe while remembering that they have every right to express what they don't like as well as what they do like. We just need to take note of what they express, but make sure to find out for ourselves if we agree or feel differently. Enjoy your lifestyle visit and I hope you find out that it's more positive that you're currently thinking!

Cheat yourself. I think that you will be curious enough to come here eventually and see how incorrect your current assessment is.

RICHIELION Well said!!!!!!!!!!!!

Life is about choices we make. I'm so glad we chose TV.
Thanks to TOTV, I have chosen the best people to work on and care for our home. Life is good!
Thank you friends on this terrific entertaining site.
Hutch, your choice.

zonerboy 03-28-2012 10:33 AM

Just my opinion, but:
If life is good and everything is hunkey-dorey, then you probably don't have too much time to be posting on this site. You're out having too much fun.
On the other hand, if something ticks you off, you probably want others to know about it. Hence the so called "negative" comments you see here.
I've only been here in The Villages nine months, and can say the absolute best thing about it is the people. Where I came from I didn't even know my neighbor's name who lived 2 doors away, even after living there 2 years. Here I can't go out to walk my dog or go to the post office without people stopping to talk. Even people I've never met.
Why??? Because here people feel safe and secure. They know they aren't going to get mugged and that the chances of meeting a grouch are pretty slim. Back home people occasionally waved when driving by, but here they do it all the time AND they use all five fingers.
I'm glad I'm Here. Don't worry about the nay-sayers.

if one rules what they do in life based on the hear say of the minority within a minority, you must miss out on a lot of real life enjoyment.

I also get the sense this could be a baited post. It just sorta feels and smells like chum.

Be careful what you read into things on TOTV. People who are satisfied with things often don't post on threads that are talking about negatives. Dissatisfied people often are more than eager to share their feelings and vent on a talk forum. Take for example the "overcrowding" issue during Jan, Feb, March. We have been here since Feb. 1 and are leaving for home along with thousands of snowbirds this weekend. The previous two years we have been here in April. I've been following this website for 2 1/2 years and had always noticed the complaints and concerns about the traffic, the crowds, the waits at the resturaunts, etc. during the busy season. While it is busier here in Feb/Mar, it is not NEARLY as troubling as one would be led to beleive from comments on TOTV. If you think the traffic is bad, I suggest you drive in any decent sized city and then compare. If you think the roundabouts are dangerous, try getting on a freeway in most cities at rush hour. As for the resturaunts, we have had a couple of 45 minute waits in the 50+ times we have eaten out, and most waits have been either non existent, or 10 minutes or less. The squares are busy, but that is part of the attraction of the place for us, as we like the energy and enjoy people watching. Parking is abundant around the squares and we have always found relatively convenient parking, even on St. Paddys day at 6 pm. Most attitudes are based on our prior experiences, and perhaps many are using ten years ago in TV, or a normal July/August as the benchmark. I can tell you from a relative newcomer's point of view the Villages is a FANTASTIC place to be this time of year, and I look forward to checking it out other times of the year when we buy. Well stated!!! We've been down here about the same amount of time...maybe longer and the flux of folks will soon thin out a bit. I've observed that alot of the complaints come consistently from the same small handful of folks. Otherwise TOTV is very helpful in gathering "important" information when one is new to the area. "nuff said"

I think this is a very fair assessment.
