We also signed up with Century link after a rep knocked on the door. We are saving a bundle AND getting a hek of a lot more channels then we did with Direct TV. In fact we have ALL the premium movie channels, 2o mg of internet and phone for much less then what we were paying for direct tv with NO movie channels plus phone and internet.

This thread is going way off topic.

I was very annoyed when a woman from Century Link showed up at my door. First of all no soliciting is right. Not supposed to do that. Second of all they were calling me repeatedly way back enough to make me angry. I kept telling them to stop. Not to mention the fliers and junk mail they keep sending me. Have to say...they are very persistent if not very annoying.

To the OP ~ Yes, with all the kicking in doors going around, having a strange person soliciting at your door can set off feelings of alarm. When that guy knocked on my door, I was alone and I refused to open the door, just shouted through the door enough for him to hear me. Not worth taking any chances that a thief could be dressed up in sheep's clothing to get you to open the door.

That said, a few months ago when Century Link was knocking on doors in my neighborhood, they did get two customers from my street. They seem happy with their service, however, door to door soliciting is not allowed in The Villages, I'm not sure who to report them to stop unwanted solicitors, but I know that is a fact, just forget where to call when we notice something that is not allowed here. It is not allowed as every type of landscaper, pest control, lawn care, etc., would be knocking on our doors all day if allowed. There is a good reason for it not to be allowed. Also, anyone could knock on your door and say they do a certain job and you give them money and then they just disappear. I get everyone has to make a living, that is what advertisement and word of mouth is for.

I had a neighbor down the street get taken for quite a sum of money from guys claiming to be landscapers and they gave them money to do some landscaping, well, they wanted money up front for plants and stuff, they gave it to them and they never saw them again. And YES, they knocked on their doors, so we don't always know who is there is really who they claim to be either. That is why door to door soliciting is not allowed as well. Just saying...to those that say "they are trying to make a living". Not everyone is "street smart" to know if someone is legit or not, so with so many people living in TV, door to door soliciting is not safe realistically speaking in TV. I am glad that it is not allowed.

I understand, DebbieB. I just didn't want people to think I was posting about door-to-door and therefore get into an argument as to whether or not it's allowed (I do not know) rather than that I was just posting a warning that there were strangers in the neighborhood approaching houses.

Century Link or Anyone Else

All you need to do when anyone is soliciting business at your door is to call Community Watch and/or the Sheriff's Ofc. They can explain it to them very well. No need to feel that you are being rude, either. Century Link has been on notice before. They are the rude ones.

where are the no soliciting signs posted?

A century link truck has been visiting a neighbor for quite a while. Wonder why he can't fix whatever is wrong.

I have seen many posts which reflect the statement "there is no soliciting in TV". I can respect that statement, however, there also is NO ENFORCEMENT of the no soliciting practice. Soliciting remains because some people want it, they buy. So, if there is no enforcement of this situation, a simple "no thank you, not interested" reply should suffice. Do err on the side of caution.

I had the Century Link guy come to my door today. His name was Nate. My husband answered the door and the guy started his sales pitch. He was polite but persistent. After overhearing the conversation I acted upon it and called community watch and they referred me to Community Standards. I called them and a lady said they would send someone out. I waited for about 5 minutes and thought, how long will it take them to arrive? I was keeping an eye on the solicitor so Community Standard could talk to him since there is no soliciting in TV. So, I called back Community Standards and asked how long it would be before someone arrived and what the procedure was when reporting solicitors. I was told that it could take anywhere from 10 minutes to hours for someone to show up. It's now 4:30 and the solicitor came to our door at about 9:30. Nobody came to do anything. He also said the there was nothing they could do to stop people from soliciting. Usually if they give the potential customer a business card Community Standards will call the company and tell them there is no soliciting in TV. That's all they can do. He said it usually doesn't work because they come right back and continue soliciting. So, if this rule isn't enforceable then why have it? It seems pretty silly to make us home owners think that something can actually be done about it. What they should tell us is that there are signs up that day No Soliciting but it can't be enforced. Then we won't bother to report it. It's just another false "rule" to make us think we are somehow protected from door to door salesmen. I'm frustrated.

I noticed them by the gate arms at the visitor gate that has the button, as you drive in.

at least 2 reasons that I can think of:

1) a certain percentage of the potential solicitors will obey the law regardless of the level of enforcement. So instead of getting 20 knocks on your door in a year, you may only get 19.

2) Having the rule allows the rule maker the right but not the obligation to enforce.

We had Century Link when we first moved here--terrible experience. Switched to Brighthouse and no problems.
