Probably more than that. I would assume Bushnell also has a police department at least

You would probably need the statistics of murders in 2017 in Sumter County, some of Lake County and some of Marion County to reach six that year. I do not recall any murders in 2017 in the Villages itself.

There was the assault at the bowling alley that must have turned deadly in Lady Lake. Redwitch mentioned it but I am not sure what year that was?

Marion County villages are in the Ocala MSA, Lake County villages are in the Orlando/KissimmeeSanford MSA.

The murder category also includes nonnegligent manslaughter cases which are any death caused by injuries received in a fight, argument, quarrel, assault or commission of a crime. Not included in the murder category are
suicides, fetal deaths, traffic fatalities, accidental deaths, assaults to murder and attempts to murder, situations in which a victim dies of a heart attack as the result of a crime, even in instances where an individual is known to have a weak heart, and justifiable homicide.

Perhaps that may resolve the 6.

pauld- The Bushnell policing was absorbed by the Sumter Sheriff's Dept in 2012. There are no individual dept statistics available.

A view inside federal lockup - News - Ocala.com - Ocala, FL

Actually there do not seem to be a lot of prisoner deaths at Coleman that are other than from natural causes. Those would have gotten some kind of publicity.

Sheriff Office Responds from Villages News

by Meta Minton March 6, 2019

A representative of the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office said statistics cited in a recent USA Today story on “rising crime” in The Villages don’t add up.

Lt. Robert Siemer spoke on the topic Wednesday morning before the Amenity Authority Committee.

Siemer, who serves as the sheriff’s office’s commander for The Villages, said he and his colleagues were perplexed by the story, which does not seem to reflect what is actually occurring here in Florida’s Friendliest Hometown.

The sheriff’s office does not segregate out The Villages from the rest of Sumter County in the statistics it provides to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

He conceded that the murder rate grew from one in 2016 to six in 2017, but he said that can be deceiving. Because the numbers are so low in Sumter County, that kind of “blip” can make it seem like the murder rate has spiked.

He explained that two of the 2017 murders were husband/wife suicide pacts in which the couples were facing difficult medical issues.

“Still each of those ‘counts’ as one murder,” he said.

Joel Aaron Curry in 2017 was found dead in a burning car off Cherry Lake Road. Others included people from elsewhere who came here and committed murder in a rural part of Sumter County. One of those was the 2017 killing of a 29-year-old Leesburg man found dead in a burning car off Cherry Lake Road, just outside the Village of Caroline. Two brothers were later arrested in his death.

The story does not clearly describe how its statistics were collected for The Villages, which stretches over Sumter, Lake and Marion counties. Law enforcement in The Villages includes the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the Lady Lake Police Department, the Fruitland Park Police Department and the Wildwood Police Department.

He added that the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office did not receive a public records request from the news organization, so it is unclear where it gathered information for the story.

Let's chalk it up to fake news. As the Sherrif's spokesman confirmed the murder rate was correct so that might seem to indicate that in fact the other numbers are also correct and that they come from the FBI Crime Reporting system via the Sumter County Sheriffs office. As previously stated the 'other' parts of the Villages not in Sumter would have their statistics included within the Ocala MSA for Marion and Orlando MSA for Lake. The 'other news source' used the MSA name rather than the county name in their attempt at journalistic sensationalism.
