That's right. If you were using the chip, you would not be sliding your card through anything. You would be sticking the narrow end of it into a slot at the bottom of the card reader.

I have a card with a chip (requires signature) that I use everywhere. I have read that, at this point in time, the US is not going to use chip + pin due to industry opposition. It is used all over Europe and works great (can't forge signature). We are behind the times again!!...

Which begs the question.....why are we getting cards with a chip when they are useless.

I think because it is better security than no chip at all....but chip + pin is much better.
