Advantages of the cloned cards: No wear and tear on the window opener, no getting arm wet in the rain, no fumbling of the card, as in it dropping either in or outside the car while trying to use it, thus delaying flow of traffic.

But, but, but.........you have to open your window. I much prefer not to open my window. I hold my card on the door with the window closed and it works with all gates that I use frequently. I would love to get one of the cloned cards installed in the side mirror but hubby does not want it done on our newish car.

My sun visor has a slot that the gate card fits perfectly in. I assume that slot is for gate cards. I can still drop the card but as soon as I get it from the visor, I prop it on the door so it is right next to the window. I am driving with one hand at this point but so far so good. I would still much prefer to have that gizmo installed on my side view mirror though.

It is not hard to wave your card or press a button. If it is raining one can go through the visitors gate and the attendant will open the gate for you. If The Villages installs a more passive system I would certainly use it. In the meantime, I will save $35.00 and just use my card.

Following your logic is it safe to assume you never spend money at a restaurant since you can save the money by eating at home? If not, why is it worth $35 to eat one meal, but not $35 on a product that gives value day after day?

The reader writer and a batch of 20 chips is less than 35 bucks and you can do your cars, golf carts even bicycles. Then do the neighbors too and still have left over chips for less than 25 dollars.

HUH?? I like the gates. Controls traffic and helps avoid collision with golf carts Helps keep out the riffraff that would use the residential neighborhoods as bi/pass roads. One of the reasons I moved here. What’s your beef with that???

Great tip ,but are the gate card readers at the same height and how far away will it read the card?

Our card is read at about 18 inches thru tinted glass driver window

Hmm, this is what retired people focus on? I was told the gates aren't there to control access but to moderate speed, at least we don't have speed bumps.

Some of the gate openers in the old sections of The Villages are higher than in the newer sections, so the mirror readers may not work as well on them. I have my own clone reader/writer, and I have found that attaching 3 adhesive discs to the mirror work better than using only one. Also, attaching a disc with waterproof tape on the outside edge of the mirror housing is the best location.

Most are mounted inside the side mirror. Not visible and work great. $15, shop around.

If it’s raining you can hold your card against your window and the gate will open. Have to make sure you’re close enough though.

Is $35 really going to make a difference in your budget? You would rather destroy your window motor or get your car wet to save a few bucks.
I’ve had my cars done and I got over a dozen cars done for $25 each.

My wife is paralyzed from waist down. We have a vehicle with hand controls that gives her some sense of freedom. The ability to get thru a gate without having to place vehicle in park to free up her hands to roll down a window & find the gate card to scan is a godsend!
