Comcast replacement modem
To lower our monthly cash flow to Comcast I'd like to explore replacing my rental modem (for which we've paid several times over) with our own. Their instructions state in part "...a DOCSIS 3.0 or above modem is required...". OK, there are many 'out there', but to ensure I don't waste my time or money is there a preferred brand/model for me to pursue? We have the 'Triple Play' option with no smart tv's. Thanks folks

I recommend you should write down the brand and model number that your currently rent from Comcast. Go to Best Buy, show them and tell them the services you get from Comcast - Triple Play. They will show you what to buy.

Comcast gets their modems from Motorola/Arris and applies their own model #. The equal one that I found at Best Buy was the SBG6580-$129 some time ago, probably a newer model # now.
Amazon has one for around $110 with Prime shipping. |

That modem will not work with a phone service. I am pretty sure that you need a modem that has a phone jack on it to plug in your landline phone.

Comcast XFINTY modem
We also have Comcast XFINITY triple play and ended up purchasing an Arris modem, model SVG2482AC. This modem has worked flawlessly for one year so far. Also, if you sign into your XFINITY account on-line, it will provide to you a list of approved modems that will work for your specific XFINITY package.

I bought an Arris (Motorola) SB6141 used off eBay for $15 about 18mos ago (the seller had over 500 of them) when we first moved in and it works fine on my 100+meg internet service but I do NOT have their phone service only internet and basic cable since I use DirecTV for TV. If you have phone service you are much more limited, if not there are literally hundreds of different modems that all work fine. Just go on Amazon and search for XFINITY or COMCAST Cable modem and/or the same on eBay (if eBay doesn't "scare" you). If you have their standard service (10megs up to 125megs) you don't need to be too selective.

Netgear DOCSIS 3.0 model C7000 works perfect....DOCSIS 3.1 model C7800 is still stupid expensive but will be future proof.
Also, MagicJackGo phone service is $125 unlimited calling for 4 years ($2.60 per month). Last edited by MorTech; 08-16-2018 at 02:16 AM. |

I been using my own modem/router for at least 15 years (maybe 20), the point is that I've saved so much money that if the modem or router fail it's well worth it to buy new ones.
It's not that hard to change the name of the router and the passwords (Google it for the router you have). Most modern routers will update automatically. Also, you should get much better performance from your own router. BTW, a modem converts the single from the cable company to a digital single for the router, which routes the single to your device by wire or wireless. |

I replaced my comcast modem with one identacle to what I was renting. I bought it on ebay. It was used and was listed from china. As I recall it was about five dollars including shipping so I bought a couple of them. that was several years ago and am still using the first one with and additional one in the closet. The only drawback is it took about a month and a half shipping but what the hell, shipping was free.
