We take a short cut through Gainesville from 75. Going way up to # 10 takes so much longer. Yes, you have to go through little towns that have very strict speed limits but it saves lots of time. One of the towns is Starke and right now I can't think of the other one.

This is 40 miles less and 30 minutes shorter than going all the way to Ormond Beach. And it's why the poster above mentions that it only takes 2 hours to get from Rt 42/301 to just south of Jacksonville in only 2 hours. |
Been trying to find the best route for 11 years...
Used to live in Sarasota and tried them all.....
Used to drive I-10 to I-75 until 301 was widened almost all the way; as stated earlier 60 miles longer. Tried 17-19-314 out of Jacksonville; too much back road! I settled on RT 301 from I-10. Obeying the speed limits I avg. @ 50 MPH. Gets me from GA / FL line on I-95 in almost exactly 3 hours with 1 rest stop. _ |
On Rt 301 the three towns to watch out for are Lawtey, Starke and Waldo.
There is a TON of stuff on the internet about this speed trap. Without starting a controversy, let's just say that it is a proven fact it is one of the most ticketed places in the country. Every time I drive from NY to my Florida home, I have to decide which route I should take. The 95-10-301 route does seem to be the fastest, but not the most relaxing. Even with being VERY careful, driving VERY slow, there is still a chance of getting a ticket, especially with NY plates on your car. Thankfully, we will be full time Floridians before too long.
