Unfortunately, you are quite right. The"happy news" is not a real newspaper at all. They also took over the old Sumter Shopper and ruined that, too.

There is usually one reason for vilifying The Daily Sun. ONE REASON. I think it does a good job and is not The New York Times or The Washington Post or even The Columbus Dispatch years ago.

Sir/Madam. I have just read all of your previous posts and I see why YOU don't like the Daily Sun. I think you will be more in tune with the Orlando Sentinel. Or The Tampa Bay Times.

As a born and raised Louisvillan, I view the Derby as an almost religious experience. Your words would be sacrilegious in my hometown. I don't follow sports and in fact I don't care about horse racing other than the triple crown. I did find a printable post position list online that I used for my derby jackpots so I was happy.

I couldn't care less about any of them. I think that more and more people feel this way.

I think that it's hard to get excited about a sporting event when you have no connection to it. In team sports like baseball, football, basketball and hockey the teams represent a city or region. I know that the players on these teams don't come from the places that they represent but most sports fans feel a connection to their home town team.

It's the same for college sports. You want to see your college team or your kid's or parent's college team do well. You might also feel a connection to a college team from your home town.

But in sports like The Kentucky Derby, unless you've placed a bet, you don't really care who wins. Most people don't care. I look at the internet to see who the winner is but it's not like I really give a hoot.

The only exception it comes to the Belmont Stakes, if the horse has won both the K Derby and the Preakness. Then we're looking a history possibly being made. That's one fo the reasons Tiger Woods was so popular. People who had no interest in golf were suddenly tuning in each week to the "Tiger Show" because they knew they were watching something special. It was something might only happen once in a lifetime. Maybe once ever.

The other exception is if you play a sport or have some other connection to it. Millions of people play golf and tennis and bowling so those sports get an audience.

I spent my life in the golf business so I enjoy watching golf. I watch the majors more than the run of the mill event because, again, history might be being made. Golf's majors and a few other tournaments are very exciting to me but I can understand how they are not to people that have never been involved in the game.

The same goes for tennis. I played a bit in my younger days but never seriously so I really have no interest. But I'm sure that there are millions of tennis players that tune in every week.

But unless you feel some kind of connection to a sport or a team most people have only a passing interest.

A 12-1 shot one this year. I saw that and thought "If only I had put $100,000 on that horse." But that's just a passing fantasy.

A few years back I was working at a club where the members had a Kentucky Derby pool. I was asked to get in and they drew horses. I won, but I didn't even watch the race. I wasn't even all that interested then. It was five or ten bucks and I thought, I'll throw it in and will probably lose.

I'm more interested in how to make a good mint julep.

Not worth the paper it's printed on.

watching a defenseless animal get his butt whipped so that he overexerts himself is not sport. It’s cruelty. If life was fair, the horse should mount the person and wupp his arse.

DR. BOOGIE................

I am a Roman Catholic Jewish Match Maker.

YOU had better soften your views. You may have eliminated from your dating pool, all wonderful women from Kentucky and thereabouts. You cannot KNOW just how serious a mistake that would be. Listen to me. You are writing like a dummy and we are never gonna get you a nice suitable girl. Woman. I meant Woman. You know we G's are your fans.

OK. I'll cancel my subscription to The Daily Sun and tell them the people on Talk of The Villages told me to do so. They'll be glad to hear that.

To me, the Daily Sun is such a wonderful paper and can’t beat the price! Upon returning to the Midwest all we get to read about is killings, doom and gloom and how awful the Republicans are.. little outside news and $2.50 a day.. but still get it just to see a few highlights, comics and puzzles. We did get some statistics on Kentucky Derby which I dearly love!

My spouse’s family has a small thoroughbred farm in Lexington, with 135 breeding mares. The Farm in the 60s, had two horses that went to the derby. Neither won, but it was exciting, in the family box to see the event.
Have been present when fouls were born, the trip to register and name the foal in the first 24 hours of birth, for the derby. Attended yearling sales, and those that were kept, watching them being trained, early morning at 4 am. Have witnessed sales, anywhere from $5,000 to over $100,000, for a new foal.
I had never been around a horse until I met my spouse, but am in awe every time I see the first time they break out in a run.

I quickly learned, you never split the pole, when walking.

Agree, the only reason we still get the paper up north is because we need it to start fires in the wood stove.

OK I will bite. Does this mean that one half is Roman Catholic and the other half is Jewish?

I agree with your complaint about not covering the Derby. They always did in the past and even in color. I feel that the sports coverage in TDS has slipped in all respects. Maybe it's time to change the editor. If it isn't Orlando or Daytona, for the most part, any coverage is very minimal. For those who don't care for the Derby, they missed some really good races, one being a dead heat. You can't tell me that something like that wouldn't be exciting to watch, because it was. The one thing they did improve on is the coverage of hockey which originally was non-existant. Over-all, the whole sports page needs a big lift.

No good deed goes unpunished. Just giving you some options, other than "odds" printed many hours before the actual race.

Good grief.

No. I am a Roman Catholic and I am pretending to be the Matchmaker from Fiddler on the Roof, (I LOVE that musical) Trying to find Dr. Boogie happiness with a lovely person from a nice State like Kentucky.

I bet he hasn't ever had a hot brown and doesn't know you wear a golf shirt with your light blue suit and you have to sit in the Paddock and people call women Ma'am and send over a Mint Julep to drink. One does not let it drip onto your painted nails or it will remove the color. Colonel Sanders himself used to sit behind us but he is frying chicken in the heavenly kitchen and nothing is the same as it used to be.
