One thing I noticed about courtyard villas is that you have to go through you neighbor's driveway to get to your backyard. They may be bigger but are also much closer together. They seem more like apartment living to me.

We all get to our private backyard and side yard by exiting from the house thru our 2-3 sets of patio doors.

And we have a sidewalk to our side yard gate (which we rarely enter), with no walking on the neighbor's driveway. There's little reason to enter the yard thru the side gate.
