Default Do we need a Security System?

We just purchased a home in the Village of Hemingway. Unfortunately, I can not be there full time... yet. Do we need a security system? The few times we were able to be in our new home, I noticed security driving by everyday. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

Probably not. When you are not there, just what would anyone steal? Chances of a breakin are greater when you are occupying your home and have valuables with you. All this new equipment, cameras, doorbells, blood pressure monitors etc. are making us paranoid.

Like any other "insurance" it is a personal decision.
The newer self install, wireless, units are reasonably priced.

One decide not have a security system.
Or they can install a non monitored system.
Or a monitored system.

We have a monitored system. No events of any kind for 15 years....ditto the home owners and automobile insurances (hopefully I won't regret saying that!!).

They all bring peace of mind.

When the occasional thief cases homes they are less likely to risk homes with a security system....with so many without.

Good luck in your pursuit.

You've got some pretty good responses already.

No not really needed. Good for peace of mind though to monitor your property. The security vehicles you see are "Community Watch" They drive every street here at least twice a day I understand.

Even just a couple of well-placed cameras can do much of what you might be concerned about.

- See if someone is at your door, in your driveway, in your living room.
- If a paper has been left on your driveway.
-If someone left a flyer at your door.
-A package at your door
-If the air conditioning has failed
-If the irrigation system is working.

If you do choose a security system, after much research, the new "Ring Alarm" with a couple of their new security cameras gives a lot of bang for the buck.

We do, along with an indoor/outdoor camera system; both of us are retired LEO's - just gives us personal peace of mind.

I’m a Federal LEO, soon to be “was” a FLEO, and enjoy having cameras outside the home. Whenever I get the urge I can look at my iPhone and see the house from all four sides. I also have one inside my garage. Sometimes I’m running late and leave the house quickly and very early (3-4am). In my haste I may forget to close the garage door. Since I’m not returning for several days, leaving the garage open can be a problem. If I were to leave the garage open it can be closed via iPhone. All video stored to the cloud, no dvr for a thief to steal. No problems to date but all this high tech stuff gives me peace of mind. However, if someone wants to rob you they will. Cameras simply make it easier to catch the guy or gal and get your stuff back.

Agree.

Cameras are good if the bad guys know there are their.
I like alarm noise.

Smile When

You will need and want a Security System the day after you have a break in. I think that in the Villages it provides a peace of mind when you are away or at night. That is the main reason for one

We previously lived across the street from a sales rep for a security company. Of course he had the little sign in his front flower bed. When I asked him about his security system he replied... it’s just the sign; it’s all you need. LOL

Installed a Simpli-Safe system I ordered online. Check their website. Easy to install, no screws just 3M removable tape. We chose not to have it monitored. As soon as the intruder hears the sirens they will be on their way as they don’t know if it’s monitored or not.

I put in an Amazon blink system. Really easy and works great. Kinda fun to see what's going on around the house. I don't really feel I needed it for security but....

Security System is a Big - Yes. There are allot of vendors, contractors , landscapers , etc in and out of TV all day. Just a push of the button on a un-occupied gate house.

Video is the way to go. Most pictures don’t lie, sound with it all on a locked down secured DVR all the better.

Anyone in TV that with all the nice things here, including your own home, cars, golf carts, etc....include no theft or other crimes in TV against the owners of homes here has their head in the sand.

Do you really think all of these indpendent service provides / workers are background checked properly ? NOOOOO.

Always better to be safe than regretful later. BE SMART !
