Default Doves

There is a tree near our villa. Very near....just over the wall separating us from the next villa. In this tree are many nests occupied by doves. Over the past several months, I had observed something that would elicit a head nod from Darwin himself (maybe). Doves aren't so peaceful....they can be aggressive if inclined. They leave their roosts early in the morning to forage.....I assume that the lizard population is kept in check by their feeding habits. They return to their roosts just before sunset...which is an interesting to watch. Scouts arrive early to scope-out the area....usually one or two large males. They sit by for a while on the wall...and if all is well they begin their call. Not the usual COO-coo-coo....but coo-COO-coo. Not to long after that, the other doves begin to flutter-in returning home. The other evening, the scout arrived only to be confronted by a Mockingbird (very aggressive and territorial) and signaled aggression with with a wing flash. The dove and the Mockingbird went toe-to-toe.....no feathers lost.....and the Mockingbird gave up ground. The Mockingbird retreated to a nearby tree and went through about five different songs....one of which was a crow (awesome). The dove was undaunted and didn't move from his perch on the wall. After a few minutes the Mockingbird took off. Then the coo-COO-coo from the scout. A moment later....the doves came home to roost for the night. Instinct. What notable instincts do we, as humans have?
