It is true that car parking spaces in the Town Centers are hard to come buy during the evenings right on the main streets in front of the stores. But there are large parking lots behind most of the stores where there is usually an abundance of extra car parking places. Still, I plan to get a cart within a few months of permanant arrival. It beats getting a second car!!

For two of you a rental car is more economical than the Villages airport shuttle. Perhaps a good compromise is to rent a golf cart for a day or two...at $18/day, it's not that costly. Riding around in a golf cart is a key part of the overall Villages experience and shouldn't be missed (especially if you have 5 or more days here).
