Default Drywood Termites

Has anyone had any experince with drywood termites or had there home treated for drywood termite. A pest control company said we should spray the attic for these termites, and pay $25 per year for coverage. I Googled, and it said these are here in the state of Florida. Any info would be helpful.

thanks.

We have lived in both Tennessee and now Arkansas and I can tell you that everyone treats for termites in the south. Both of those houses were new construction so they treat the foundation while under construction and come back once a year to check and treat the house. I am assuming it is pretty much the same for Florida.

I think dry wood termites are different. I have heard of them in wooden furniture. I don't know about attics. I haven't heard of that, but know the termite people do inspect the attics for any damage.

What exactly are they treating in the attic? Are they fogging, painting or spraying? Borate treatments can be kin of sloppy what about runoff of the spray? Is that going to come down into the house? I think so. Do you have active drywoods? I don't think TV is over run with this type of termite. Sounds like a cheap sales ploy. I'd get an inspection once in awhile but treatment-You should wait. Drywood termites DO NOT do heavy damage very quickly. It may take years for a colony to grow to any significant size. Most corrective treatments now days are localized to the area of infestation due to this fact.

Unhappy Swarming drywood termites

I found swarming drywood termites in my home (built 1992). Massey didn't cover me for them when I purchased my home a year ago. They only suggested Subterranean termite protection. Massey is suggesting I tent my house and spray. This takes 3+ days and will cost over $2,000. Has any Villager witnessed or undergone a house tenting in The Villages? Any suggestions gratefully received.

Talking I'm Otto the Orkin Man........

My experience with drywood termites is quite dated. While in college I worked every summer for Orkin Exterminating Company in Tampa, putting canvas tents on houses and filling them with Methyl Bromide gas to kill the termites.

This was whole house treatment and was effective for drywood termites, but not for subterranean termites, which requires treating the soil with chemicals.

On rare occasions we would "spot treat" for drywood termites. This involved injecting liquid chemical into affected wood under pressure.

I quite honestly do not know what changes may have taken place over the years in the techniques of killing drywood termites, but if you have a drywood infestation it is quite serious. They can do major damage that will severely affect the value of your home. If you ever have a termite infestation in your home you are obligated by law to disclose it to the buyer if you sell the house.

Because this is such a serious issue I would get multiple estimates for any termite treatment and one of the estimates for me would be from a nationally reputable company such as Orkin.

I use Florida Pest Control out of Leesburg. They provide coverage for dry wood termites. The big name companies that have volumes of customers in TV do not cover for this type of swarming termite. I know this because I used to have termite contracts with both before I changed to Florida Pest Control.
