Amazon.com

A couple months ago I spotted a robot lawn mower from about a quarter mile away and thought it was an off-leash dog wandering on someone’s lawn. I was on high alert until I realized what it was.

My lawn is tiny. I decided to buy an old-fashioned push mower like I used to use. About $100. However, they don’t work well with the springy twisted grass I have. It sometimes catches the reel and stops it from turning. Last time I mowed it injured my wrists, and they were sore for several days.

Former Home Depot employee here. Don't get anything less than a 40 volt, lesser voltages don't hold their charge as well.

I'm looking into an electric lawn mower. Any suggestions? How many years does the battery usually last? Is it better than a gas mower?

I have a EGO for about a year now. Super happy with results. They have a few years of battery warranty when residential use.

My suggestion is to create a “budget” based on when the warranty will run out in order to replace the battery, if needed. Probably it will last beyond that.

Highly recommend

I have an EGO 2035SP. I am generally pretty happy with it. It came with a second battery, which is good because it chews through the battery pretty fast. The self propelling is pretty nice and it will also bag the clippings if you want. The handles fold down and it stands on the front wheels so it doesn’t take up much space when stored - I really like that. I haven’t had it long enough to comment on how long the batteries will last. It cuts about the same as a gas mower but is a bit quieter. A push gas mower is nearly indestructible if you change the oil regularly. Time will tell about the durability of the EGO.

That was a good idea. I had friends up north that would use a push mower for a workout experience. The equivalence of fast walking and doing push-ups. There may be a type of Florida grass that a push mower would work with? But, I commend the effort to think "outside the box".

Electric lawnmower

I have a fairly used possible four times electric lawnmower. Will sell for $75.

Greenworks makes excellent products, at a very fair price, that are plenty adequate for homeowner use on the postage stamp lots in the Villages. Being a part timer, I don’t have a mower, since we obviously have to hire someone. We do however own several other greenworks products for our Villages home, including a combination pole saw and hedge trimmer, chain saw, blower, and weed wacker. It’s great that they all run on the same fast charging battery. I always charge and store the batteries inside the house when not being used. The same products would be completely inadequate for our home up north on several acres of land, where 2 stroke gas and diesel products are necessary.

Get one with self-propel and headlights so you can mow late evening in August to avoid heatstroke :)

EGO and Ryobi are good. I have an 8 year old EGO with original battery. The key to battery life is to keep them cool and only fully charge them just before use...Don't fully charge right after use unless the battery is fully depleted...Lithium batteries don't like sitting at full charge. Mow later in the evening when the sun isn't beating down on top of the battery...Or you. Charge battery indoors if you can.

When I lived in NC, my gas-powered mower gave out so I asked my neighbors if I could test drive theirs - tried a 40V Riobi, a 56V EGO, and a 60V Greenworks

I liked both the Riobi and Greenworks better than the EGO simply due to hand placement - the EGO's is much more vertical than the others.

I chose the Greenworks because I could get a two-battery bundle that included a dual battery charger (the friend I borrowed had two or three single battery chargers plugged in around his garage).

The link posted earlier in the thread includes two 5 amp hour batteries - mine came with two 4 amp hour batteries, but I really like the dual charger.

If you don't have a corner lot, you'll be fine with any of them - just find the one you're comfortable pushing around for 30-45 minutes

I use DeWalt tools and bought a DeWalt mower. The 2 mower batteries can power my other tools.

I suspect I’d be fine with my corner lot as well.

I have a corner lot and use an Ego. I think mine was the Mid to Mid-high model with self-propel and a 7’ish amp-hour battery.

When the yard is dry, I can mow the yard on the single battery.

When the yard is damp or wet, I might not finish. I do have another battery.

I cut at 3 1/2” or 4”.

The Ego does a mostly good job. I would buy again.
