who checks their email all the time throughout the day?

I don't so how does one manage these email types who think that I am sitting at home with my email open all day? an insurance sales rep emails me that he is available to call at 2PM today at noon time. . i wasn't on email most of the day. . as i am not on the computer most of the day

my phone email is slow slow and like 4 email accounts, there is too much useless email to sit for 15 minutes to wade through my emails evry hour or so

Not sure why you would have 4 email accounts. I have 2 - one for friends and family, and the other for anyone else. No junk email in the first account and about 10 a day in the other. I check once a day, but sometimes more often when I’m completely bored.

we have more than that, but then we aren't you:
I have a professional email for over a decade, which was switched to a new domain after two decades
I have a junk email where I use for bbs and web sites and other companies that will try to sell you something every day
I have a second email which I am using for only a select few financial firms
We have a family account which both of us read and use for family stuff so we both can answer/respond if the other is busy
We have a business account for the business. .

and once the stupid republicans get your email on a list, you can't get them to delete it and they just keeping adding new domains. . so its easier to get a new email address.

I called of course, and left a voice mail, and he called when he was free and we had a good discussion about house insurance for our particular situation.

I am with BrianL, just call, but a text to ask if you are free is also very acceptable. . In the corporate world, I can take 45 minutes to write one email, to be sure that all the questions are answered correctly, thoroughly and respectfully, without any possible mis interpretations, and short enough to be intuitive to the reader.

Just an idea, but it's the way I do it.

I own my own domain name ... & it's a pretty cool one, I've had for 20+ years.

My Personal email is: Brian@ ........... .com.

Every other email, addressed to ??????@........ com, comes to me. I could use "SportsGuy@....... .com" and it would come to me. Sometimes I use "GeorgeClooney@...... .com".

Then I just set up "rules" in my email program, to filter the non-specific mail, wherever I want it to go.

My email address for Callway Pre-Owned, is "CPO@...... .com". For Taylormade, it's "Taylormade@ ....... .com". That way, I always know where the email is coming from and who's selling my email address.

When Equifax was hacked back in 2017, I was one of the 1st people to report it to Equifax. How did I know? I got an email address to: "Equifax@........ .com". No one on earth has ever seen that email address, other than Equifax ... someone had to get it direct from them, via a hack.

I have eight e-mail addresses. Each serves a different function. I get notifications on my cell phone for one of them (noiseless, I set it to vibrate so the chime doesn't interfere with my hearing aids). For people I do /not/ want notifications from, I set up their contact info on my list so I don't get notifications. I check a couple of my e-mail accounts throughout the day, and the rest I check once every few weeks as needed.

All spam goes into the spam boxes, with no notifications at all. I check those once a month. Anything interesting from a company I do business with, I move to my inbox and read later when I'm in the mood to do so, and then I "select all" and delete everything in the spam box without opening them.

It takes me a total of 10 minutes to go through my e-mails every day, with the singular exception of some substack bloggers I subscribe to. I read their blog directly on my e-mail instead of going to their substack page, and then I delete the e-mail. I consider that my idea of an "op ed" section of a newspaper though, and not really e-mails.

I’m a little surprised by this. My gmail has some sort of filter and I don’t even get some emails ever unless I check my trash folder. When I don’t get something from the lawyer, for example, he says, check your trash. Who expects an instant reply to an email?

bowlingal 11-09-2024 06:14 AM

I check my e-mail all day, every day. texts too. You are not talking about a massive amount of time if done regularly. Like the weeds in your garden....stay on top of it!

learn how to use email with all of its newer features. You think I give out my real email address to everyone? I bought a car last year and I sent out an email to 50 dealers in the vicinity asking for what I want and the cheapest out the door price. I used a particular email for all these. I created an email folder with a rule that any replies using this email address go to this specific folder. Then when I was done, I deleted this email address and I will never hear back from any of them. I do this for dozens of sites, so when I want to see who responded to me from Facebook, I look at my Facebook email folder, nothing else, no scrolling thru hundred(s) of new emails..
Applying these features, Email is so much cleaner to look at and easier to navigate.
Setup rules in email. 99% of spam emails automatically go to junk then get deleted on a schedule. I look at my junk folder once every couple of days to see if anything good got misplaced.

If time is of the essence, they need to call or text me.

you need to apply filters first .

You're dealing with a generational issue of laziness and incompetence.

I have this conversation at least once a day, with people I do business with ... who expect that email is now the same as texting and is synchronous communication. I get email all the time, "Hey B, I have a conference call set up in 15 minutes, if you can make it on the call".

It ****es me off. Email was a great invention and what made it popular, was the fact that it was asynchronous communication. You sent it at your convenience (even if it was 2 a.m.) and the receiver got to respond at their convenience ... now every idiot thinks the world is sitting around, waiting for their email.

I've had a cell phone since before there were "cell phones". I had an RCC telephone in my car in the early 80's. When cell phones began in 1988-1989, I was one of CellOne's first 100 customers in the Boston Metro Market. In those days, you needed to also have a PalmPilot or Blackberry, to get email on the fly. It was a huge convenience, but the generations behind us, have misused the technology.

People don't know how to have a conversation ... they just throw words at each other, via email. Our company lawyer, who I deal with on a daily basis, says I'm about the only client who calls him on the phone and insists that he call me. I can get things done on the phone, that would take 20 emails to accomplish. The whole email thing, is nothing more than flat out laziness and insecurity. People don't want to be forced to answer a question or provide input, in a real time conversation.

How do you solve the nonsense? My phone does not retrieve email, unless I "push it". I'm on the computer in the morning when I'm having coffee and when I get home from the golf course, until dinner time. I tell everyone I deal with, if you email me between 10 am and 4 pm, don't expect a reply ... I didn't get your email.

I got 98 emails yesterday (I just counted). I got ZERO on my phone in real time. I don't have time to deal with MORONS, who believe email is real-time communication.

Just to take this one step further ... try calling a company or someone you do business with. NO ONE answers the phone any longer. They allow to go to voice mail, so they get to hear what you have to say ... then they can "think about it" and not have to provide an answer or opinion, in real time. You are now at their mercy, when they find it convenient to call you back.

Just to further continue my rant at 4:30 am. I emailed a Membership Director at a private country club, 10 days ago (I'm tired of golf conditions in TV). I have yet to get a substantive response from this jerk. All I get are "canned" email responses. Haha. He doesn't know, I know his General Manager. I called the GM last night and told him just how incompetent his Membership Director is. This lazy jerk is going to be looking for a new job in about 6 hours.

I totally disagree. I much prefer email communication to a phone conversation. I like being able to answer at my convenience, especially if I need to do some research. Also, I save and file away on my computer important emails to refer back to and as proof of agreement. I’m old too, but you have to learn to manage your email to avoid being overwhelmed. That’s where I see the laziness. Email is a great tool if used properly

The only thing I can suggest is having one email address for important or necessary things. I do it this way and have found it doesn’t accumulate very much junk mail. I absolutely don’t give this email unless it’s official business.

Wasn't the point of the original post, that folks don't understand that's how email is *supposed* to work ... yet senders seem to expect immediate responses?

More like some folks *feel* that is how email is supposed to work in spite of the reality that email, like texting, is a common method of real time communication.

You don’t want to check email throughout the day? Fine, that’s your choice. You may miss things but again, that’s your choice. I choose to send all unknown callers to voicemail and I’ve missed things because of that.

yup, it started that way about 40 years ago. . but I wasn't looking for email address suggestions, when the post was about how email was being used and its expectations. . having 1 email address isn't going to change how often I look at it. . and it may not be good as our main email address didn't work well when traveling abroad.
