What you'll learn, if you read the thread is that the OP asked additional detailed questions, which people are responding to in order to be helpful, & friendly.

I found this regarding leases:
Lease vehicle: Copy of lease agreement and the fax number for the lienholder or leasing company. Your leasing company will also need to send us a power of attorney

Gee, I thought that was just mechanical engineers (my husband). I’ve learned never to ask him the time. 🤣😂

We never had annual vehicle inspections in California. Just a smog check every other year.

I remember there are quite a few steps.

Buy the house.
Get home stead exemption
Get new drivers licenses
Get your car(s) registered and insured in Florida
Get voter registration cards
Get a bank that does business in Florida

Don’t expect the process to be too speedy, and roll with the punches.

MD has no annual vehicle inspection requirement, other than a bi-annual Vehicle Emissions Inspection...

Not that I'm complaining...

While you're establishing residency, don't buy a winning Powerball or MegaMillions ticket, your old state will come after you for their cut.

DDToto41 04-07-2024 02:55 PM

If you are a veteran take a DD214 with you they will put it on your drivers license.

Website is not specific about how to get it all done at the same time.

I'd like to make an appointment within the week of moving into my new place if possible.

Thanks!

Are you looking to establish residency or domicile? If you are a snowbird looking to not pay income taxes in another state where you own a 2nd home, you need to establish domicile, which is a much higher bar than residency.

Correct. You can call yourself a Florida resident, but if you actually live in another state for more than 6 months per year, that state can tax you. Some states will use credit card receipts and other electronic tracking systems to make a case that you need to pay state income taxes and other taxes in their state.

You can go to the same gold dome building on Powell Road because the DMV processes are state functions, not county functions.

Is there anything that you can do there that you cannot do at 7375 Powell Road in Wildwood?

No idea. The request was 'Where to go in Lake County'. I have no idea where the requestor is in Lake County, but since they asked I am assuming they wanted to know.

You need to unregister to vote in your previous state.

Yes, you need to be out of the non-resident state for greater than 6 Months for sure; but in addition, you need to establish domicile in FL. There is a long checklist of items you need to take care of to establish domicile.

I didn't do anything to establish domicile in Florida, but Virginia has never tried to tax my income. I am a Florida resident and do not live in Virginia. How is Virginia going to tax me? Can you please post this long checklist?

License and Registration

Make sure if you live in Sumnter County you go to Powell Road, if you live in Lake County which is where Newell is in you go to Leesburg DMV on Rt. 27

Why? It is not required. I live in Lake County, and I got everything done at the Powell Road office. I have never been to the Leesburg office. The DMV is a Florida state function and has nothing to do with the county that you live in.

JOERILLA 04-08-2024 09:19 PM

You don't need to bring the vehicle or vehicles you are registering to the DMV, there is a 1 page form you can print out on the dmv website that allows any law enforcement officer to verify the VIN on the car is correct and they will accept that as proof at the "Gold Dome". I literally pulled up next to a Sheriff at McDonalds and asked him to sign it, he looked at the car and signed it. Took all of 15 seconds and he was super friendly!

Okay, maybe perhaps NEED is not the right word, but if someone is registering their car, need their title, & insurance card, isn't easier to drive to the County Service Center in the car rather than looking for Sheriffs at McDonalds? Plus once finding a Sheriff at McDonalds, pulling up next to the Sheriff, & he looks at the car & signs the paper, then what? Drive to the County Service Center in the same CAR the Sheriff just looked at? What if the Sheriff has finished his coffee & is driving out of McDonalds as you arrive? What then? Put on your siren & pull him over? Even though I am sure you are correct, it didn't take much time & the Sheriff was super friendly. The folks at Sumter County on Powell Road are also super friendly & it is a pleasant walk for them out to the car (as I was told by the Sumter County employee, as she was walking along side of me).

JOERILLA 04-09-2024 04:11 PM

You assume alot about cops. Since I was in Michigan it is not a pleasant walk for the DMV employees in Sumter County. it was a little easier then driving the car to Florida to register it. I said ANY law enforcement officer. including the one that I talked to at McDonalds who was helping a woman change her tire...not drinking coffee.
