Default First 30 days in The Villages off to a BANG !

Yesterday was the culmination of our first month in The Villages. We have our drivers license and voters registration in the mail, not all boxes, but most, unpacked, landscaping is at the top of things to do along with golf cart rental followed by purchase yet. Wer've found a church, but not a doctor, and we feel darn good about our progress. Enjoyed Vinny's post as well as others by folks in our stage of settling in and encourage those in the process to "make it happen". I must admit that I was not ready for the welcome I received at WALMART yesterday though..... We stopped by there after church to pick up a few items to do repairs on damage sustained from the moving company fiasco. Just in the process of paying for my items and BANG. The loudest shot I have ever heard andf the closest I have ever come to being shot - on the spot - right there in WALMART. Sounds like a Ray Stevens song doesn't it - it wasn't - it was real. The clown in front of me was putting his change away and trying to move along when low and behold the pistol he was carrying (pollice said he had a permit) fell to ther floor and discharged. Yep, I thought my first month in The Villages had come to an abrupt end. The actions of the WALMART staff left a lot to my displeasure, but somehow someone got him stopped in the parking lot, after they let him walk away after picking up the casing.

The sheriff's department was very professional and left a very good impression with me, even if they did say "it was an accident" and I replied "I happen to think it was negligence myself, but then again I am the one that almost got shot". So, stay alert on your next visit to WALMART, the darndest things can happen there - even in the Villages.... (He wasn't Villages age).

To add a positive to the story, we met a neighbor, we wouldn't have met otherwise..

It sounds to me that you don't like guns much anyhow.

This is Florida. We got gators too. The chances of a gator getting you are greater than being shot under those conditions buy some Bubba.

Stay away from ponds and out of the woods and you should be OK. Or, you could git a gun so you can protect yourself in both situations.

Relax and enjoy.

Welcome to The Villages

He probably doesn't like the guns that drop on the floor and quite possibly could have KILLED him. Bullets coming from a gun on the floor or in someone's hand do the same damage. I'm not anti-gun by any means. Used to do some shooting myself but when some knuckle head drops his piece on the floor and it goes off it would make me a bit nervous.

Doesn't sound like a matter of whether one is for or against guns. How about responsible ownership?

I don't know a lot about guns but I thought they had some kind of a safety devise on them so they will not go off like that....someone educate me!

One can say the same thing about cars. Responsible ownership and all.

I will guarantee that the incident in Wal-Mart created one super safe Bubba. That will never happen again involving that guy. I guarantee it.

Yoda

PS It is damn hard to find a modern handgun that will go off when dropped without a malfunction.

Yoda, I'd love to believe that this gun totin' yahoo learned his lesson, but I'm doubtful. As that famous philospher Ron White once said, "You can't fix stupid". I'm a hunter who has owned guns for fifty years, and when I see these kinds of incidents, I just cringe. kb8ptw, you seem to be handling this much better than I would be. Seems to me that this guy should have been cited by the cops for something.

Not to mention that a pistol should not discharge when dropped on the floor.... must have been a cheap weapon. And I agree about responsible gun ownership.

Angry Lets jump on the victim Yoda

"You must be against guns" No their against dead.

I am sorry but anyone who does not have their firearm secured in public should loose their carry permit. It is a right to bear arms not a right to endanger. If the society wants to maintain its right to bear arms then it needs to be strict with those who jeopardize others by not doing so in a safe manner. When a person is accidently shot they are just as dead. When that happens you will invariably read how something like the wall mart incident happened in the past. People who don’t act responsibly need to not be given a pass as they are jeopardizing the continued rights of those who do. It is the acts of such people that cause the statistics that lead to anti-gun legislation. I knew a child killed by an accidential discharge by an untrained gunowner, it was an accident he is just as dead.
Manditory safety training should be instituted before a carry licence is issued. There are alot of bad drivers out their but think of how many there would be if a licence had no written or road test?

Default Bullet proof underwear

Sorry that your life was put in jeapordy by some clown who has no business owning a gun, much less carrying one. I have only been here a month and am appalled at what I am hearing from people who own guns. I have seen reckless gun handling and a shocking lack of knowledge about carrying and using a gun. Unfortuantely there is no cure for stupid. I have been shooting guns for over 35 years and usually when they go off accidently it actually means someone accidentily pressed the trigger. All three safeties on my gun can fail at the same time, defying the odds, and still I would have to press the trigger for it to fire.

Anyway, welcome to the "Hood" and dress to protect against the sun and gun.

Sound like the guy was not a responsible user. The safety lock should have been on. That could have been one bad error.
