My husband just shared his thoughts with me......after hearing about your home invasion and robbery........please see below....and good luck in apprehending the culprits.

""Too bad; yes putting the "empty box from the safe" out is an invitation to the thieves.""

""An alarm system would be helpful, but equally important would be three wireless motion-detectors-cameras. One at the front door, one at the rear door and one inside. Once motion is detected, it records who the camera sees as well as emailing the picture to your smart phone. These systems are available from $75 to $300, I have been researching these systems for the past few weeks, ....just in case we require one in The Villages.""

I completely agree with your husband. Camera's are a very good choice.

On a side note: When I took our trash to the end of the driveway, the
burglar left the trash but took the container...Is there a hidden message
here for me???????

Was the container a garbage can?

Burglary was reported in today's, Nov 22 Daily Sun, local section.

I am so horrified by this thread, that I can't come up with appropriate words. This saddens me beyond belief. I never thought that I would have to consider an alarm system for my house here in TV, but I'm rethinking it now.

Back in the 70's, our condo was robbed and I didn't even know it for a few days they were so neat. But my dog was poisoned and passed away and when I realized I was robbed, I connected it to the dog's passing. It was at that time that I got rid of all expensive items. I wear no jewelry, have no expensive electronics, just a slim line TV (whatever that's called). I want nothing to give these bas**rds anything to tempt them. But the best security are my darling schnauzers. No one can come near this house, day or night, without them alerting all of us. Next time someone complains, I will read them the riot act.

I am so sorry for you, Lynn, and anyone else that has been violated in this manner. Please take care and watch out for each other.

Kitty, I hope you find these people... I'm relying on you!!!

I use Suncoast Security

Great Company. The system has remotes that look like a key fob to turn it on and off. No putting in a code and running to the door. System is portable, you can take it with you from one house to another.

It's worth a call and the time to look at the system.

Tell them Jim on Ainsworth told you to call.

I guess my suggestion wasn't that far off after all. I truly hope they catch the thief but the chances are slim that you will ever get your rings back.....they have probably already sold them. Perhaps you and hubby can have a special day and go
Pick out something new that you can cherish just like your other rings. Maybe renew your vows with the new rings? Thanks Giving may have a whole new meaning this year. My heart goes out to you.

Happinow - thank you for posting such a beautiful idea on replacing Lynn's rings and having a renewal of vows.

Lynnelf - I am so sorry this break in happened to you and hubby and I pray they catch the guys and are able to recover your rings. If not, consider Happinow's ideas on replacement. You can replace material things. Your love and memories associated with your stolen rings will always be with you, something no thief can steal from you.

To the poster who suggested that Sanibel Heights Association look into ways of getting a possible discount for homeowners who want to invest in a security system, not a bad idea. We will definitely look into a system regardless. In the meantime, I am calling the Sumter Sheriff's office and inquire about having someone come out and give me a safety (not sure what they call it) check that they offered at one of our club meetings.

Be safe out there and watch what you put out for trash!

Purchasing security systems, motion detection lighting, cameras, are all great ideas on how to comfort you as a homeowner. Ultimately, if a criminal decides to rob you, there is really little you can do. When I lived in Baltimore, the criminals knew exactly how much time it would take for the police to respond to an alarm condition, thus they would break in, grab and run before the officers arrived. Cameras are comforting, but theives know how to cover up their identifing features, thus the camera is of no use. I know it may not sound like the answer, but the only thing that limits you as a target is to limit expensive belongings that thieves can steal and pawn for quick cash. Most importantly, you and your family are safe and were not home during the intrusion. Please keep safe!

On the other hand, upon moving to FL, we have divested ourselves of lots of the pricey, material things in life and we use very little cash. Maybe they would run off with my books and the sofa? Hmmm, I could get over that. Much to think about!

I am also in the process of divesting myself of pricey, material things before I move (don't know when but we are moving there!)

But sad to read that there is another reason to do so besides downsizing.

Sure hope they catch those creeps!

think about how the alarm system works - you are the alarm - someone breaks in - alarm goes off - alarm co calls your home to see if someone is home - no answer - co calls your alt # - then police - meantime - burgler is gone with loot --

Lt Neimah Wolfe says he does not use alarm when hes not home but when he is home as an alert.

Shimpy 11-22-2013 06:00 PM

I too have a safe in my house but has nothing of value in it. It's there to occupy them so they can't find anything else. I'll leave a few cheap things on the dresser such as a Timex watch to give them the idea that they were successful.
The first place burglers will go is the bedroom and that's the last place you should hide valuables.

Most safes sold at Home Depot etc, are for fire protection. They are not security safes. I worked for a police dept and we had a lot of high tech heavy duty safes broken into.

Get a strong safe and fill it with bricks. (the bad guys will waste they're time with the safe)

Put your valuables in a bank safety deposit box.
