The black cardboard covers the card on both sides, making it almost invisible from outside the car because of the tinted window.

So.....the card reader is not effected by the cardboard.

Ah. I live in the "historic" section. There's a golf cart path that leads to my dentist, several restaurants, Walmart, Aldi's, Lowe's, and Beall's (and soon BJs) that requires you to have a gate card and you can't drive a car through it. It doesn't have a red button, it's a private gate. We have 4 vehicles (not including my bicycle, which I ride often) and 2 gate cards.

Is there any way to get additional gate cards?

Yes, it works fine in my wife's Acura MDX...

I mentioned this chip to hubby and he is OK with trying it out for our SUV.

Our only hesitation.....is there a possibility there will be damage to the mirror?

The sun visors (driver's side and passenger side) have a little storage slot and the gate card slides in there perfectly. It is very handy to keep the gate card there.

Nope... All they do is move the mirror (inside the housing) out of the way and stick their finger in there to place a small adhesive disc (the chip)...

Curious: can anyone get a chip for our gates? Or do you have to have one of our gate passes and code the chip to the pass somehow?

I ask because if it's that easy, it'd explain how there are several folks who come through the golf cart gate up in the historic section, that has no 'red button' to press, who don't actually live in the Villages at all. They're Stonecrest folks.

And if it really is that easy, maybe we should find out if Stonecrest gates work the same way. If so - maybe we could just go right ahead and visit their community by getting chips on our golf carts.

The chip is a copy of your gate card so it is necessary to get the chip. Also, there is no limit on how many you can have, you can buy a chip for your golf carts or second car or third car. The code on your card and chip are all the same so it has no impact on the developer or the data base. We have been using the chip for months and have had no issues, we do carry the card in the car as a backup but so far, not needed.

I had no idea! I'm picturing having to have the mirror disassembled. This sounds quite easy to do. Thanks.
