Default Golf cart insurance available for renters?

We will be checking into a rental in The Villages that includes the use of a the owner's personal golf cart. We are excited to have the use of the golf cart but we are concerned about insurance coverage in case of possible collision or personal injury.

We are from out of state and contacted our insurance broker to check whether homeowner's or car policies have any coverage for driving a golf cart in Florida. After checking he said it is doubtful but they are still checking.

I see many rentals are listed to include use of a golf cart. What do other people do to obtain insurance coverage. Can a policy be purchased locally? I do not want to be unprotected.

Your suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Might try The Villages Insurance Agency. I believe they are writing golf cart rental insurance.

Have you asked the owner if he has insurance that covers your use?

This issue has been discussed many times on TOTV. The upshot is many people rent out a home + golf cart without getting insurance for a variety of reasons, including thinking they do have insurance that covers a renter when they actually don't.

If a home owner does have golf cart insurance to cover a renter it most likely only covers the home owners liability not your liability. It insures what costs the owner may be stuck with if you have an accident but can't pay the all costs associated with it or if you sue the owner for the costs of an accident.

Think about what happens if you rent a car... if you get into an accident the you pay for it, not the rental agency, but your car insurance probably covers rental cars.

We have golf cart insurance because we know our car policy doesn't cover what happens when we use our golf cart.

But this is just my own speculation, you should do your own due diligence.

Excellent suggestion. If they don’t write this coverage, they may be able to direct you to someone who does. You are wise to be concerned about this.

Thanks Mleeja for the suggestion. I contacted them and was told that they can only make a policy for people that own the golf cart, not for a renter that uses the golf cart. I would assume that these are yearly policies, not just for 2 or 3 months when a renter wants coverage.

Thanks for the reply Marathon Man, yes I did ask the homeowner, they do not yet have a golf cart, they just purchased the house in December and put it up for rent. They will purchase a golf cart for renters use before our check in. Helpful neighbors told them to include a two page" release and waiver of liability" for use of their golf cart, which basically puts the entire responsibility on the renter, who is unable to get insurance for such coverage.

After discussion with homeowner I am hopeful they will consider adding a policy that will protect the renter.

I think it is obvious that I am trying to do my "due diligence" Homeowner does not have golf cart yet but was not planning on getting any insurance coverage to protect the future renters. The homeowner advised they are aware that this coverage is available to them. I don't think they realized that this insurance is likely unavailable to the renters.

From what I read here the Renters want to get there own insurance on the golf cart for there protection. Being there is no title to this golf cart they could get insurance on it in there name for the time they are using it. When I got My insurance they ask Me My name Drivers Lic. number, address and who else is going to drive it. I pay 100.00 per year and this is the only thing I have insured with allstate so that wont include multiple item discount. They should be able to get there own insurance on this cart for the time they will be using it.

You will be hard-pressed to get insurance on a vehicle that you don't own. If it's this big a problem for you, just rent one from TV golf carts. Again, you will find that they are self insured, so you'll probably lose a lot of sleep over that.
If it's that big a worry, just drive your car. If you spend your life worrying about everything that can happen if you walk out the front door, you're probably not going to have fun here anyway.

The ads for our rental include a golf cart but in actuality we include the price of them renting a golf cart. We have a relationship with a cart rental company that gets them rent for a good deal. We forward the contracts to the renters, if we get their signed contract back to the cart rental company the cart is waiting in the garage when they get there.

If they don’t require a cart they get the price of the cart rental refunded from their rent. If they prefer a four person cart we can upgrade it for them for a small premium. If they have problems with the cart the cart company can trade it out. All insurance is handled through the cart rental company.

Interesting way to do it. Are you sure the cart rental includes insurance for the renter? The homeowner I am trying to work out a rental said they contacted a golf cart rental company in The Villages and they were told their golf cart rentals do not include any insurance coverage not do they offer it. Would you mind posting the phone number for the outfit you arrange the cart rentals with? I could call directly and see what I could arrange on my own and then maybe get a rental rate reduction from homeowner.

Spring_chicken am I correct to assume you don't insure your golf cart? Maybe not even your automobile? Why worry, right? I mean why even believe the numerous posts about all the reckless cart jockeys and severe accidents in The Villages, many due to half blind geratics. Should I just assume those posts are blown way out of proportion?
