Please excuse my editing, buggyone. I wanted to support your comments.

Not only breaking the law but falsifying an application for insurance. A golf cart is no longer a golf cart if it is capable of exceeding 20MPH. Nor is it a (an?) LSV as it is not properly equipped. LSV owners pay premiums in amounts almost equal to auto insurance while golf cart insurance is much less. With all of the accidents now occurring, and being publicized, it won't take long for the insurance companies to start denying claims.

For those who may be unfamiliar with the law, read on.

"320.01 Definitions, general.--As used in the Florida Statutes, except as otherwise provided, the term:
(22) "Golf cart" means a motor vehicle that is designed and manufactured for operation on a golf course for sporting or recreational purposes and that is not capable of exceeding speeds of 20 miles per hour."

My highlighting.

Local law enforcement might not be too concerned about enforcing the law but insurance companies are not shy about applying the terms of the contract.

I am sure that a lot of people from other states are alarmed by the bad drivers in The Villages. However, this is not unique to TV. It's common in Florida, especially in crowded neighborhoods along the coast, and seasonal vacation areas. Maybe also a higher risk in golf cart communities.

Works both ways. I'm sure drivers in TV are alarmed by the drivers from other states that are here either visiting or newly moved. Watch them on the curves. You'd think it was a Formula 1 race. Yield? Never! Stop? Not if I can get away with it!

To be fair, I came from an area where aggressive driving was the norm. People on the freeways would cut anyone off to gain a car length. While I wasn't that aggressive, I still tended to drive fast. I would figure the last minute I could leave and still get to work on time. It took a few months here to ratchet that down and drive more serenely. I'm much better now, thanks for asking.

There are also plenty of people that live here that do not have cart insurance. Going 19.9 or 25.9 it makes no difference.Myself my cart is on the faster side about 25 mph,I prefer it that way.Few times I needed the extra speed to prevent accidents.I have insurance but many do not.

GatorFan 08-31-2012 07:45 PM

Do you have an auto policy or a golf cart policy? If a golf cart policy and your cart goes over 20mph you might want to call your agent and find out if you really have coverage. I would think the answer is a big NO. Best to know for sure before an accident than after. If answer is YES get it in writing.

How do you know that not many have insurance for their cats? People you've talked with?

It makes a big difference. The law is very clear. If you choose to ignore the law you are not only risking fines. You are also risking voiding your insurance. It seems a lot of people are not aware of the seriousness of the risks involved.

These risks have been mentioned numerous times in the past on this forum.

I hope you are wrong about plenty of people here not having insurance.

By the way. Your cart wouldn't even be classified as an LSV as it is capable of exceeding 25MPH.

Extra speed to prevent accidents? Interesting. Care to elaborate?

Check out this link about golf carts vs Low Speed Vehicles (Street Legal).

You can find yourself paying a huge fine if stopped by a police officer as well as finding yourself uninsured for liability if you are in an accident - thus wiping out all you have worked all your life to achieve.

Just put Golf Cart Speed in a title and all of the experts come out to tell you what the law is - is it on a path or road side - how old driver is - same old - same old - just search for golf cart speed - i am sure there are numerous threads about golf cart speed ------ My golf cart goes 15 mph just so the people with the 19.9 mph can pass me

Disneychix 09-01-2012 07:31 PM

I checked with my insurance co. and yes it is forfeited should I be in violation. I only pay $115.00 a year and the insurance co. said that I only have liability therefore if I cause an accident and I total my $12,000. golf cart my insurance will cover for liability but not for me or my golf cart. They explained that for that price they would be out of business if they covered bodily injuries and my cart. Now they also said that if I caused the accident and I was in speed violation my insurance would be voided as it is an off road vehicle and not to exceed 20 miles per hour therefore the other person in the accident could sue me and go after what ever I own. I asked should I not be going over the speed limit when the accident occurred how could I be in violation and he said that if my cart is set with no governor restrictions I would not be covered. He suggested that I register my cart and make it street legal but he gave me the price and it is very expensive and that is only 28 mph. I will use my car when I'm in a hurry and I will drive in accordance to the law because otherwise I am spending $115.00 a year for nothing.

goodgrief 09-01-2012 07:57 PM

Well I would think that grandma or grandpa would have to come get there 14 year grandkid because I highly doubt the officer would allow him/her to continue on there merry way. So thats how they know who the kid is :) Because the owner of the golf cart would have to come get the cart and kid.

Thank you for sharing this with us, Disneychix. Read it carefully, folks. It isn't good news for those with modified carts.

We moved to TV from Tampa Bay. We moved here to retire and get away from the fast track. Before we moved here I joined TOTY and read about cart speed before buying a cart I had the option of a faster cart but stayed at 19 mph. I didn't come here to see how fast I could get around but to slow down and enjoy TV.I like the slower speed and don't mind getting passed (or gassed) I read that if you have a cart that exceeds 20 mph and are on a diamond lane and going over 20 you will be ticketed for driving a unlicensed, unregistered and uninsured vehicle.(is this correct?)
Slow down and smell the Gardenias

Maybe not, Maybe grandma and grandpa would leave him there...........
