John

I never look at the driver. I'm on a bike but even if I was in a cart I feel much safer if the driver goes first. For me it has nothing to do with being rigid about the law.

Read CNM's reply.

I'm printing this, finding a nice frame with an elegant matting material...and hanging it over my desk. :1rotfl:

There are many that do not know or understand the law on this subject. Almost every day, in my golf cart, at such intersections I am waived through by an auto driver.

I happen to be one who will not go and just wave back. Most auto drivers wave again like,,,,no you go. I shake my head and fold my arms....they usually display being upset in one way or another......and then there are the horn blowers behind me. I wave and wish them good morning/afternoon/etc. It seems like an authority contest....sometimes:o

Please remind your friends/relatives/visitors to not stop and wave golf carts through. One they are breaking the law. Second, other vehicular traffic may not be aware and third it sets up a danger on the vehicular roadway.

This was in the dot com news this morning and triggered this reminder.

There I have done my good deed for today...right?
:duck:

First of all, I agree 110%

But to be clear, some people think cars ALWAYS have the right of way over a cart. SIMPLY NOT TRUE. The cart is a motor vehicle and governed by the same laws as automobiles. The reason a car has the right of way at a gate is that the crossing cart traffic has A STOP SIGN, the car does not. No different than an intersection with a 2 way stop. Who stops and waves cars with a stop sign through in that situation? Hopefully no one. Imagine someone stopping on 466 to let someone from a side street go through a stop sign.
Merging is quite different---the vehicle in the lane has the right of way over the vehicle that wants to enter that lane, but.....it is not a race---the vehicle in the lane has no right to accelerate above the speed limit to block out the merging vehicle, which in this case is always a cart (or bicycle). No different than entering the interstate----the merging vehicle can only proceed when it is clearly safe, but you always run into bozos that speed up to prevent your merge.

Lastly, at a 4 way stop, the vehicle arriving first has the right of way, regardless if it is a cart or car. If 2 or 3 vehicles arrive at the same time, the one furthest left has the right of way

I agree with everything you wrote except for your last comment (quoted above). According to Florida law:

"Florida Statute 316.121— (1)The driver of a vehicle approaching an intersection shall yield the right-of-way to a vehicle which has entered the intersection from a different highway.

(2)When two vehicles enter an intersection from different highways at the same time the driver of the vehicle on the left shall yield the right-of-way to the vehicle on the right."

So, if the vehicle on the left yields to the vehicle on the right, the one further/furthest right has the right of way.

Today, I was leaving Spanish Springs on my golf cart and taking the cart path around the roundabout at Morse. I stopped in the median at the stop sign where cars coming down Buena Vista towards the square enter the roundabout to wait for the cars to go into the roundabout. Of course, that is a two lane entry for the cars. A "lady" in the inner lane stopped and wanted to wave me across the road there. I just shook my head. She beeped her horn when I looked away as I was not about to cross 2 lanes of traffic illegally on the cart because someone in the inner lane wanted me to. She finally relented and gave me the finger on the way by. She must have been irritated that I didn't make her feel good about herself today.

I totally agree with you. Great post

I think its kind of silly to argue with someone letting you go ahead of them. Of course the car does have the right of way but to say it's illegal to let a golf cart pass in front of you is a stretch. If anyone out there driving a car has received a ticket for letting a cart go ahead of you please let me know. For that matter I don't think in the history of this place anyone driving a golf cart has received a ticket for going when a car tells you it's ok to pass in front of him you can. Please prove me wrong. I don't think so.
I would rather pass in front of a car if they say go ahead than sit there and argue and get slammed in the the back by some clown that's watching him telling you to go instead of watching you. Now that I guarantee that has happened.
HAPPY MOTORING!!

My son was here this weekend and he told me he has never seen people get so mad when asked to do the right thing. He as waiting for a car that was coming through a neighborhood gate and they were determined for him to cross in front of them when they had the right of way. When he wouldn't they sped through the area, totally ****ed off

The reason many of us do not accept the wave is the hope those who do the waving get the message.
What message?
The traffic behind them....does not expect them to stop!!!
Some times there are more than one behind them not expecting to stop.

We all know that getting residents to follow the rules/laws is far too often futile.
Sorta like stop signs/speed limits/fixing ball marks on greens/raking bunkers/filling divots/et al.

Has nothing to do with rigidity....all to do with impact on fellow residents (VS feel good wavers).

I completely disagree with your logic.
If a golf cart at a gate crossing the road has NO right of way as a 4 way stop sign Period check the law.
Also for golf cart merging; carts top speed is 20 mpg and a car is 30 to 40 mpg depending on where you are. Now a car is covering twice as much ground as a golf cart is and the merging golf cart interprets that the car is speeding up when in fact the car has to hit the brakes to allow the slow golf cart to merge in the lane.
I have frequently had a idiot golfer merge in when a car has the right of way and is 20 feet behind them and they have no business merging, they just don't want to stop, complete arrogance!.
Unless the golf cart is a LSV (low speed vehicle) your theory doesn't apply.

When a car tries to wave me through, I stay put and motion to them to continue through. Just sitting there without waving to them to continue might upset some people.

Whatever I am driving I always work on the premise 'when in doubt, give way to bigger than me!'
Stuff who has 'right of way.'

dewilson58 05-16-2018 07:17 AM

When a car waves me thru a crossing, I have my wife get out of the cart and stand in front of the car until I'm thru the intersection.

Finally after 6 pages and 58 posts a reasonable solution comes forth!!!!!
