Costco prime steaks are very good. We have a smoker/grill and cooking these ourselves at home is way better than Chop House for sure.

Steaks

We had filets on New Year's Eve - from a whole tenderloin from, wait now, Aldi. We've been buying it for several years, and the meat is flavorful and tender. And much more reasonable than $20-$30/pound, or more at a restaurant.

Honestly not where you would think it would be. Best steak (delmonico) is Prima by far. Prime Rib, had to go there didn't you. Mezza Luna is actually the best prime rib here. Problem is getting it at the right temp. It sells out extremely fast.

Chop and the others around here, have low grades of meat, in addition some don't even know how to properly prep and then cook one. That would include the chains outside the bubble. Those are for people with failing or no taste buds.

You can venture up into Ocala and fair better, or even Orlando, but around here you're pretty much stuck with what is and isn't.

I had a great steak at Prima in Brownwood just the other night.

Go to a steak house that specializes in steak because if they weren’t good steaks they wouldn’t be in business, so like some people say Chophouse or Texas Roadhouse, if you’re talking about a restaurant!

Maybe a fluke but I had prime rib at Prima and it was cold inside. They heated it but it seemed clear to me it was reheated slice rather than a freshly roasted rib roast. I like their other food. Haven’t had another steak there.

phojo 01-08-2024 09:36 AM

I’ve always liked Longhorn steak house on 441, but recently have gotten excellent Prime Rib at Perkins. Yes I was surprised.

The Villages can certainly support a fine steakhouse, it just has t happened yet. Many think Chop House is good, it isn’t. It’s just better than Sizzler, which many believe to serve good steaks…

Go up to Ocala to Mark's Prime or Stirrups. There is also a Remington's Prime Steakhouse that is opening later this month in Ocala

It's a crapshoot. Went to Chop House for my husband's birthday. He ordered filet, I ordered ribeye. Both were very tough, couldn't eat most of mine. The manager tried to tell me it was because I ordered medium rare! However they did take mine off the bill. A few days later my friend went and she and her friend had excellent filets. Go figure.

Texas Roadhouse. Choose the steak from the display case. Best in town.

Justputt 01-08-2024 03:07 PM

Now, I'm hungry... I haven't checked around TV, but we used to buy half a cow with friends, have it butchered and split it up. It was much cheaper that way. Anyone know if that's done anywhere near TV?

LianneMigiano 01-08-2024 03:28 PM

Texas Roadhouse

Of all the places we have gone, Texas Roadhouse has NEVER served us a bad steak or prime rib. The only negative (for me) is that it's noisy in there. The service has always been good and it's priced right, too! :bigbow:

Last two times at Longhorn was too heavily seasoned. Returned it on the second
visit (reminded waitress I asked for lightly seasoned) and asked for lightly seasoned and steak came with zero seasoning.

Their salmon is very good.

Thanks for the info. I don't understand the Omaha comments about USDA grading.

They say, "The USDA grade of beef depends on really just one factor: marbling." And, they say that their steaks have "exceptional" marbling. So, if that is the case, why don't their steaks have a USDA Prime grade?

Regarding the Kansas City Steaks, they are pricey. They charge $120 per pound for USDA Prime filet mignon, as compared to $35 per pound at Publix. I have never been disappointed with the Publix steaks. You can definitely tell the difference in tenderness between USDA Prime vs USDA Choice.

Wow, $120 a pound for a filet and customer does not pick it.Not in my budget. Wonder how much difference there is between a prime vs choice filet. Bet the difference is miniscule. Hate to say this but Sams does have a great deli like butcher set up. Pick your own individual steaks for a lot less than Publix.

Actually it probably comes in a container with dry ice like the stuff from Omaha Steaks and you have to cook it. I mean the Kansas City Steaks. Steaks - Premium Steaks - Gourmet Steaks Online | Kansas City Steaks

USDA choice filet mignon at Sam's is $20 per pound vs $25 per pound for prime. The Publix prime is $35 per pound, but, in my opinion, the Publix steaks are better and worth the extra cost. $120 per pound is way overpriced.

Filet is a very tender and very lean steak. I wouldn’t spring for prime. Marbling wouldn’t matter much on that cut.

That being said I also find filet to be bland and much prefer strip or ribeye.

In my opinion, choice filet is nowhere near as tender as prime filet. Also, the leaner the steak, the tougher it is. That is what marbling is all about.

Now if you don't mind paying for good steaks (for home), Creekstone Farm is my go to. I also buy some stuff from Wildfork Foods. They are a good value and usually good quality.

Honestly though, for steaks you can find good stuff at the supermarket if you know what to look for.

Anyhow back to the OP, not directly in the Villages, but Prime 3 in Leesburg was great. Expensive, but really good.

Yes we are digressing away from what the OP wanted to know, which is about restaurants that serve good steak. Seems like commenters prefer to talk about steaks they make at home, and about Omaha.

So I’ll throw in my comments: I think the meat packages are a good value. I recently received my first Omaha box. For $100, I got bacon wrapped filet Mignons, chicken filets, hamburgers and hotdogs, as well as the dreaded apple tarts someone mentioned. That’s a lot of food! So I have to disagree that it’s not a good value. But no way is it as good as a steak at Chop House — if you care to shell out $49 for a NY strip or ribeye.

Did you read the original post? The OP didn't say anything about a restaurant.

I can make a choice strip steak at $10-$12/lb better than most steakhouses that may have aged prime. You go to the steakhouse for the ambiance and overpriced steaks.

almost sound logic, except most people can't tell the difference between prime and choice.

I know it looks overdone in the pic, it wasn't. It's only cooked to 120 degrees internal. The pic definitely made it look darker than it is, so I agree it looks overdone. I see that in a lot of my meat pics.

Funny thing is I find NY Strip to be overdone at a much lower temp than ribeye. I can bring ribeye to 135 and it's still medium rare. Strip is a bit firmer steak and 120 is enough to bring it to medium rare.

My smoked rib roast looks more done than it actually was also...

And this ribeye steak also looks more done in the pic than it was. I just suck at pictures. LOL. To my credit, you aren't getting a sear on a steak like that at most steakhouses.

Prime 3 is the worst.
Been there 3 times and had to return prime rib and steaks each time.
I never have had to do this anywhere else.
Once they showed me my bill on their contraption at the table, which was correct and I gave them my credit card. Lucky for me me when I got my receipt I looked at it and they billed me for a table of four behind me.
That bill was double mine.
They apologized but I have suspicions the waitress knew the other table, and did it on purpose but no way to prove.
I did ask him other time and she was no longer with them.

We had great steaks, awesome service, and a bartender that knew how to make real cocktails (not just vodka soda and beer). It's funny how different some trips can make or break an impression of a place. I'm not doubting your experience at all. But who knows, maybe the steaks weren't great and we were just drunk from the good drinks. :D

What was wrong with the prime rib and steaks? Cooked wrong or just crappy tough meat?

Mmcourter 01-09-2024 07:31 AM

Cody's in Brown wood Square makes a great steak, and their prime rib was awesome!

It's interesting that the name of the restaurant is "Prime 3" but their menu doesn't indicate that any of the beef they sell is USDA Prime.

How do you grill it. I also pay between 35-40 (in Sarasota)per lb for thick Filet Mignon. I would like any input as to what method you like best preparing it.

I hate to say it, but I just sprinkle it with a Montreal steak seasoning and use my large ceramic coated George Foreman grill. It cooks 2 steaks on both sides at the same time and takes about 7 minutes to cook a 2-inch thick steak. An outside open grill is too unpredictable. I would either overcook or undercook the steak.

Our indoor grill only goes to 450 degrees so will not sear a steak. What temp will the foreman grill go to?

Best steakhouse around is the "Back Room" located in Apopka Florida

450F is adequate for a good sear. Make sure meat is patted dry, though.

I’ve had “fair” steaks here in The Villages - for “great steaks” - Orlando or Tampa - or even better, my kitchen.
