Question Gray Pipes

In looking at resale manufactured homes I see many that proudly announce that the "gray pipes" have been replaced. Other than the obvious dreary color, what is wrong with gray pipes? Why should they be replaced and by what? If they must be replaced how much would it cost to replace them? Sorry for my plumbing ignorance!

Default Beware

Coach,

This was used primarily between the late 70's to mid 90's in mostly southern homes. Cost was the driving factor but unfortunately the composition of the pipes breaks down with age causing voluminous amounts of water to possibly enter your humble abode. Not good.

I'd suspect the cost wouldn't be cheap to replace existing plumbing. My only suggestion would be to contact a local plumber.

As well as deteriorating they were usually not glued. They were joined by a compression "clamp". Cheap to buy and cheap to install.

F16 is correct. Not cheap to replace. So, the seller is pointing out a plus and if you look at other construction from that era, make sure to check for gray pipes. Better yet, hire an inspector.
