A Merv rating of 13 through 16 are higher quality filters. They require special blowers to pull the air through them. These filters should not be used in home HVAC or furnace systems. They are usually reserved for superior commercial applications.

I believe ours are MERV 11, also be careful with the dimensions, ours are NOMINAL 4" by 20" by 20", but the exact dimensions are slightly SMALLER, I go by the exact part number to make sure they will fit.

My 8 year old Carrier Unit only uses 16" wide filters. The whole return air unit is 18" wide. We have a 2BR CYV. Anyway, I've been buying 3 packs for about $50 on Amazon with free shipping for a few years.

US Home Filter SC60-16X20X4 MERV 11 Pleated Air Filter (Pack of 3), 16" x 20" x 4"

The only filters I have found that fit my unit are the "Flanders" brand at ACE Hardware. I had to return filters I bought from Lowes and Home Depot, because they were a little too big. I use Merv 8 or 9 because I think the super high efficiency ones can impede your air flow, especially when they get dirty.

As with most specialty web sites, you can usually get a better deal on Amazon.com. In this case, you can get a 4-pack of 20 X 20 X 4 MERV 13 Accumulair Diamond filters for $69.95 with free 2-day shipping.

I haven't purchased in TV yet. All these prices seem high compared to the 1" filters that I have used in the past. I would change them every month or two. Are these thicker more expensive filters changed less frequently?

I use the Filtrete 1550 20x20x4. I have rather severe allergies so I change out my filter monthly. Yes, I know, that’s overkill but I “feel” better with a fresh filter monthly. I have no pets and don’t smoke, and assuming you don’t either, I still wouldn’t go beyond 90 days. Everyone has his or her own routine. You will figure out what is best for you.
