So do I get the water monitor from an irrigation service?
You get the Flume water monitor from Amazon. If it senses a leak you get an email. 10 minutes of your time for a diy task. No plumbing.185.00.

I know that I used precisely 4,291 gallons this month, before all the rain came

After one emergency like yours when the water wouldn't shut off, I started having the system checked twice a year. The sprinkler heads always get knocked askew or broken by the lawn mowing crews and it's not like I'm awake at 3am when the watering is done to notice problems.
