If the smart TV has access to the streaming apps that you use, technically, you don't need a Roku stick. But I have two smart TVs and I also have a Roku stick plugged to each TV. They function much better than the smart TVs, and you can search the Internet for any streaming app you want and add it to the Roku stick. Some smart TVs do not allow you to add additional apps. For me, it is well worth buying a $50 Roku stick, even if you have a smart TV.

There is a lot of fiber-to-the-house between 466A and 44. Probably other areas also. Call CenturyLink or Quantum (or whatever their new name is) for availability at your location. I believe the other vendors have fiber trunks and coax to the house. Doesn't really make much difference. DSL from CenturyLink in some of the older areas, which is based on copper POTS, is another story.

It is fiber and download and upload speeds are both 960 MG. It is only for internet I am pretty sure they don't even offer packages like cable does. I think it is about $70 a month which is cheaper for the speed than all the others. For some reason cable only has slow upload speeds but not fiber.

Fiber can be configured with difference upload and download speeds.

If you go with Comcast, (just internet, nothing else) they will give you a free streaming box and you can stream all you want. Most people need internet anyway so this is pretty good. We are doing this and have no issues. There are around 14 free streaming channels. Most do suck but, many have at least 1 or 2 paid suppliers like Amazon or netflix that will be a little better. Local TV (news) has to be given I do believe.

Spectrum also has a deal for new customers that’s kind of hard to believe. We signed up for 1 gig internet and the cheapest TV option and they gave me 12 months free mobile service. Unlimited data. After the 12 months it’s only $30 a month, no contract and cancel any time.

None of the shows on any of the streaming services are actually recorded. As the show is running, the service stores local copies of the show in their database. If you choose to "record" it, it sets a flag on your account so the stored copy shows up in your recorded history.

There is zero upload bandwidth consumed for any recorded show (well... nearly 0. It does have to send back the command to set the flag when you select record, but that is only a few bytes).

For services that allow FF through commercials, when you "record" a show, it also sets a flag that allows you to FF on the recording. For On Demand they usually don't turn this flag on for you, so no FF on On Demand.

When searching for an alternative to cable, I discovered that YouTubeTv is the only streaming service that includes local PBS stations. That was important to me.

If I'm reading/understanding your "Location" information, you live south of 466A. Are you also north of 44? We are in that area and are looking for better performance/price internet than we are getting with Xfinity. Coming up to end of current contract March 2023.

That's really interesting. Had Xfinity for years (cable, internet, & mobile phone. Bill it totally out of control, called to inquire about ONLY taking internet, we were told $90 a MONTH...yep, NINETY DOLLARS a month ! How, where, did you find $30 a month for internet in this area ? We sure are interested it that option. Did you get that on the Xfinity website, or did you go to their main location in Leesburg ?

What speed is that? I think the Xfinity $30 plan is only 75 mbps. But they offer many different speeds for higher prices. In addition to the store in Leesburg, they also have a store near Best Buy at Rt 441 and Rolling Acres Rd. They are very helpful.

We're south of 466A and north of 44 and have Quantum Fiber. $65/month for life for 940MB down and unlimited data plus they provide the router. 940MB is more than anyone would need for download speed.

I believe they have a 200MB plan for around $45/month too.

Alternative to Xfinity.
 

. I live in Lake Deaton between 466A and 44. I cut the cable 5 years ago and dumped cable period. Went with CenturyLink fiberoptic 100Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload speed, I also bought and used my own router, a onetime out of pocket purchase of $150. The package offered by CenturyLink at the time was $49/month, "Price For Life" with no contract required. CenturyLink has spun off their fiberoptic business and it is now called Quantum Fiber. In switching to Quantum my price went from $49/month to $30/month and my download speed went from 100Mbps to 200Mbps with an upload speed of 200Mbps as well. During the 5 years since I made the switch I have never lost or have had interrupted service even during hurricanes, high winds and heavy rain. My service and router supports 3 TV's, 1 computer, 1 iPad and multiple cellular phones and I have never experienced any buffering. Good luck and smart move in cutting the cord.

Lucky you! We wanted to go this route down here south of 44 in DeLuna, but they aren’t available yet. Hope they are eventually. We have Spectrum internet only, and they’re okay, but best upload speed we can get is 25. With our plan at $70/month we have 500/20.
