I would guess that it's cheap products to control cost and maximize profits. I have a problem with one of our windows with a film buildup between panes where a film is building up. The service guy, from the window co. that made the installation, came yesterday and informed me that there's a leak in the seal. Gonna cost me around $120 something to have just one pane replaced.

The buildup was there long before I purchased the home. Too bad the previous owner couldn't have bothered while it was still under warantee! I have a feeling it was covered while they still owned the home from questions I was asked by the WC.

Also the only way to get to the outside of the window to clean them is to actually go outside and remove the screen. They can only be removed from the outside and not the inside. Whatever happened to the swing in easy clean windows that have been out there for a whole lot of years? In my opinion they're cheaply made! :ohdear:

HOW TO INSTALL A SOUTHERN HOME SECURITY SYSTEM...

1. Go to a secondhand store and buy a pair of men's used, size 14-16 work boots.
2. Place them on your front porch, along with a copy of Guns & Ammo Magazine.
3. Put a few giant dog dishes next to the boots and magazines. *
4. Leave a note on your door that reads:

Bubba, Big'un, Duke, Slim, & I went for more ammo and beer. Back in an hour. Don't mess with the dogs - they attacked the mailman this morning and messed him up bad. I don't think Killer took part, but it was hard to tell from all the blood. Anyway, I locked all four of 'em in the house. Better wait outside.

In our last house up north, we had the same problem with a broken seal. I found a guy who did a process that resealed the window for less than a replacement. If you google "foggy window repair Florida" you can get some links to services that do that. Our was called Dr. Window but I don't know if that is down in Florida. Good Luck. It is a real nuisance when those seals break.

I have sliding type windows here in CT. I have wooded dowels, (bars), that prevent the windows being opened. I also have a security system that makes a lot of noise when triggered. Front and back doors are deadbolt type locks.

Do locksmiths install deadbolt type locks in TV?

Does anyone know....if we bring a security system from our current home to TV, can any system be installed in a home and monitored or would it have to be one from a security place down there? We hate to just leave the system we have....it was expensive!! Thanks.

Thanks for the advice. Just fixing the seal though won't solve the problem of the cleaning the cloudy residue between the two panes, probably caused by mucho condensation over a long period of time.

We too had residue and it got all cleared out. Don't quite understand how, but it was all gone and clear when he finished. It was probably about at least 5 years of stuff or more. We just lived with it until it was time to sell!

Can you de-install a security system and re-install it in another home? Yes. Will you be able to find a company willing to do that? Most likely not. I'd have to think that most companies won't want to undertake installing an old/used system when they won't be able to guarantee that it already performed properly prior to someone else removing it. Then there's always the DIY option!! :)

Best bet would be to start with a new system bought and installed locally that will come with a warranty since its new. Check prices not only on the system and the install but also the monthly on-going cost for the monitoring service. Some places pull you in with the low price of the system......but they make it up with higher monitoring fees.

Thanks. That makes sense. They are going to want to guarantee their system not a used one. A good thought though.

There's only one problem with home security systems.....you can't leave your your windows and doors open to catch the lovely spring, winter and fall breezes.....now in the summer, you gotta close up the windows anyway.

Some options:

- If you have double hung windows and have magnetic contact switches protecting them, you can place the another "half" of the switch how ever much higher you'd like to have the window open - raise the window to the point that the "half" on the window aligns with it and you're good to go! But it does make it awfully easy for someone to get in given that the windows aren't latched.

- Eliminate contacts on the doors and windows and use motion sensors that are confined to areas that will just cover the windows and doors. This would be kinda tricky to execute - it would depend on the sensitivity of the sensors, the location of the doors/windows and motion sensors, and the proximity of any normal in-house activity when the system is armed.

Just some thoughts..... :D
