Inexpensive Options for monitoring I have one and feel safe for intrusions and fires |

Just as an example: there've been numerous times since our move here, that if I'm out walking carrying a bag from Publix, someone in a golf cart will offer me a ride. That's unheard-of back in Minnesota, whatever the vehicle being driven. There is a level of trust here that is just not seen in most other places. |

However, Stone Crest is a true gated community.

Crime, truth statistics
There is a website that I use that gives you the true statistics in your neighborhood you can Google it yourself, most crimes here you can read about second hand through the so-called newspapers are usually golf carts turning over shoplifting and old drunks punching each other usually it's their partners. Very occasionally in Lake or Sumter you will hear about a shooting or a violent robbery or a carjacking but that's usually at the commercial areas or the low income parts of Ocala

could they actually do it? |
An alarm system is safer than a gun. We have a panic button near our bed, if I believe someone is in my home one press and the alarm goes off. If someone breaks into your house and their armed, they will have the advantage. They most likely have scope your house out and know how many residences are inside the dwelling. Almost all the houses in TV have the same layout, so they know where you're sleeping and what door you'll be coming out of, and you do not have a clue where they will be. I'm not saying you shouldn't own a gun it's just an alarm system is safer.

I don't know if they're common here but some alarm systems used back home did not flash and wail but instead sent an alarm signal to the police. Good in theory but the cops might be some distance away and there's a good chance the robbers would be finished with their business and well away by the time the police get to your home. And if you're IN the home, well...good to have a firearm available in case things get dicey. We have an interesting system: four cameras that report motion in real time to either my or my wife's iPad. Not only that but the cameras are equipped with speakers so we can talk directly to whomever is being observed. A couple of years ago we were gone for a week and made arrangements with my daughter-in-law and her husband to check on the place from time to time. First time they did it we spoke directly to them while they were opening the front door. "Surprised" is a mild word to use. |
The Handy Dandy thing needs a gate card to program it.

Another thing to be aware of are service people you hire to paint, repair plumbing, electrical work, any lawn care, etc. Now, I'm not saying their all bad, just keep a watchful eye out especially if you pay in cash. |

You don’t need security here! It’s very rare to get a break in and it’s likely a neighbor who knows when people are gone. This is first I have heard of any breakin in 4 years of living here. Don’t panic over 1 story! It’s not the real world here!
|
That’s not The Villages!!! Way outside! We don’t have that here! Never heard of it in 4 years living here.

A friend of mine has an interesting sign: To hell with the dog. Beware of owner. |

When we built our 2nd home we got a security system because we were closer to the then outskirts of TV & knew some thefts occurred, particularly of building supplies & appliances. But also of patio furniture left outside of a birdcage being constructed. Now we see more golf carts being stolen & car break ins, particularly if left overnight in your driveway. Have had friends that had their golf clubs stolen from their golf bags while having lunch as well. Bottom line for us, lock your doors, be cautious but not paranoid & don’t tempt fate. The sheriff department will tell you the same thing. This is paradise, but not utopia. Florida has a big drug problem & we are viewed as easy targets by some. The Villages has a lower crime rate than most of Florida but it does occur |
Do you have to carry liability insurance if you fire your 38s
miss and kill an innocent bystander? |

Most houses are broken into when nobody is home, your guns are the first thing they look for it you advertise that you have them. Gun stickers on cars is another thing robbers look for. |

Call MMD computers for a security system. Or, at the very least a $25 Blink camera from Best Buy or Walmart.

. i had adopted a dobe, & no one ever tried to break in again. they didn't have to know he was a baby-doll, it was the look alone that would make people cross the street when i was walking him. i realized he was more 'powerful' than a weapon, in that sense. |
