read all you can online, but rent for at least a week, moreso a month
and you'll figure it out. visit the things that interest you and talk to people.

Not everyone reads the book!! Half the people don't follow it if they do. Only your defensive driving can protect you as much as that is possible.

I don't recall the new resident orientation being that helpful
just to be honest

If you are like us you will get hopelessly lost a number of times. Within a minute a wonderfull villager will stop and ask if you need help. I aspire to know my way around well enough to be one of those who stops to assist. At that point I know I will be a true Villager........
