Default Hurricanes/Tornados

I was talking with someone here in Ohio this morning and she said the area around TV are always in the path of hurricanes and tornados, that it is a dangerous area to live in. She wasn't knocking TV, quite the opposite, but I'm curious to know if this is true. Any long-time Villagers out there who can give me more info on this? SookeyJo from soggy, rainy Ohio

When we announced we were retiring and moving to FL a few folks raised the weather issues but my reply was please tell me an area where there are no severe weather issues. We even once had a tornado about a half mile from our house in 1979 which yes was very rare for CT. Been through ice storms, blizzards and even hurricanes up north but I am not about to let them dictate where I can live. Ok off my soap box.

Having said all that you need to keep in mid that TV is some 60 odd miles from either coast. That will have an impact on any wind from a hurricane by the time it reaches here. Not sure how we stand as far as tornado activity as compared to other parts of the country.

We are going to move to the Villages around the beginning of next year. That said, we are living in S florida and the notion that you will be 60 miles from the coast is not very revelant. We had hurricane Wilma hit the west coast 160 miles west of here, travel across the state and hit us on the east coast harder than the previous 2 hurricanes. Florida is a narrow state and the feeder bands can still be over water, which fuels the storm, as it comes across the state. Being in The Villages which is in north central Florida, the past history favors mild hurricane seasons. If you live near the coast in the S.E. part of the country you got to expect storms, hopefully milder than a full blown hurricane. The villages offer so much that we decieded to retire there in spite of the storms. We had other places in mind in north Ga, and N.C. but said, what would we do there? The Villages offers so much more.

Good Choice Les. I know you will like it there. I lived on the panhandle gulf coast and was hit by a few ' little' hurricanes Category 1 and a 3 Opal which was the worst we had. Also lost a home to Katrina here in Slidell a month after I moved from Florida. now I am trying to move back to Florida because there is no place like it and the people are so friendly. I dont think you have much to worry about as far as hurricanes in the center of the state. Tornados can getcha anywhere on the map.

You can pretty much figure that any hurricane that hits the coast will be reduced at least on e category by the time it reaches The Villages because we are so far inland. As far as tornados... there is no "path" thru Florida that is prone to tornados. We were hit by one a couple years ago, but tornados have been recorded in every state, including Alaska and Hawaii. With the exception of "tornado alley" in the south central part of the US, we are in no more danger than anywhere else.

Default Hurricane Ike

We had damage all around KY from 78 mph winds from hurricane Ike last Sep 08. Then we had an ice storm last Jan/Feb 09. That's enough for us. We're moving to TV. Maybe not for those reasons. Okay not for those reasons.

We are from Michigan....
Cold ...Cold .....Cold

We have many storms here...ICE Storms, Thunderstorms, Tornadoes, 12% unemployment (much more to come with GM and Chrysler), Detroit /Crime, Flooding and maybe 50 nice and sunny days a year

I guess we'll take our chances.....

Congratulations!! You must be so excited!
Hope you have a smooth move! (Hey that rhymes lol lol! ).
I live on a up on a mountain here in NY and we, too have had some doozies of storms, i.e. ice, snow, windy, lightning etc. So if we have any bad weather (if I ever get to TV) I will grab my doggies and hide under the bed!
Good luck to you,
Jeanne

Smile Weather

We've been here over nine years and we've had one tornado south of 466 and one mild hurricane. Don't sweat the weather. My complaint is that it has been so dry! We could use another mild hurricane to replenish the water supply around here. If you are interested in being in a 'cane I would recommend Homestead, FL. We lived in Ft. Lauderdale in '92 and South Miami and Homestead were flattened! Hurricane Andrew. The reason we haven't had any bad weather is because I bought a generator that I have never used.

Default Trying to reason with hurricane season.

Life is too short to worry about everything.
