Expense is one.
$1200 -$1400 for the latest and greatest cell phone, plus the price of a monthly calling plan is a joke.
I also see them as a adult pacifier that they stare into while your talking to them and go berserk when they lose them or leave the house without their stupid phone.
Don't get me wrong, if used correctly they are great, like keeping in touch with family
up north, checking in at the airport or hotel, checking prices etc.
Sorry, just my opinion

Relative to expense, this week I got a new iPhone SE for $400. It's very capable. No need whatsoever to go with the latest and greatest.
Relative to the adult pacifier, you can use it as you wish. The fact that others use it in unfortunate ways has no bearing whatsoever on what you would do. I don't see how these observations on others affect your decision whether to get one.
I can't live without it for the following reasons:
-- Emergency calls as others have said. If your car breaks down on the road, just call a friend or AAA. If you have a health emergency, just call 911. If you see another with a health emergency, just call 911. Etc., etc.
-- GPS. It's 15 minutes before the tee time and you can't find the starter shack, just use the GPS (Or call the starter shack). I use the cell phone GPS in the car/cart all the time.
-- Shopping. I go to the store to get the widget spouse wants, but there are 10 widgets of the description she wanted. Just send her a picture and ask what she wants. Or, just call and inquire what she wants.
-- Camera. I use it in so many ways:
-- Need a spare part. Just take a picture of the broken part and the unit it's in, and go to the store or internet with all the info you need to get a spare.
-- Time with friends. Nice to have a camera in my pocket for unforgettable moments.
-- And, then there's the phone always available.
PS, my wife and I have a rule that the cell phone never comes out when we're dining.
