Default Important Information for Medical Emergency

I'm posting this to give you some important information that you might or might not know about. I had to call 911 yesterday because I was afraid my husband was having a heart attack. Thankfully he wasn't. While the paramedics were here they asked me which hospital I wanted to go to TV or Leesburg. I asked what's the difference and how far. It seems that TV Hospital does not have cardiac or neurology emergency care, but Leesburg does and there's only a mile difference (well from our house). I think it's important for all of you to know in case you fear a stroke or heart attack that you or a loved one should request Leesburg immediately. By the way, my husband did receive excellent care there and thankfully everything is fine. I'm going to post this in medical also as I think it's very important to know. One more thing, the response time was very quick, they sent a Fire Engine and Ambulance, and 7 people! A great big thank you to all emergency staff! :bigthumbsup: :bigthumbsup: :bigthumbsup:

So glad to hear your husband is doing well. Thanks for the post. The information you provided is valuable. We're new to The Villages and still learning. Thanks again.

Since my husband has cardiac concerns, that's very good to know. I'm hoping we can be in TV within the year. I think of it every day.

The important word here is emergency. TVRH does offer cardiac care such as (from the web site):

Transesophageal echocardiography.
Echocardiography stress/Holter lab/trigger monitor and application.
Electrocardiograms/nuclear cardiology.
And a new ambient cardiac cath lab.

But Leesburg is second in the state in terms of heart procedures so i would assume that they are more adapt at cardiac emergency as well.

Thanks for the heads up. It basically confirms exactly what our family doctor and a neighbor advised us about emergency care when heart attack and stroke are suspect. Glad your husband is ok.

Thanks, Russ, this is great to know about Leesburg's cardiac prowess. How does it compare with Shands?

I assume if you live significantly south of 466, in the Amelia area or southward, you are just about as close to Leesburg hospital as to The Villages Hospital. Is this accurate?

lessburg is the hospital of choice if the emergenncy is heart or stroke related. the only possibility of avoidinng significant disability from a stroke is to get to a stroke center such as the one at lessburg hospital. asap.

Did a quick mapquest comparison from my place in Liberty Park and it comes out about 7 miles to TV hospital and 15 to Leesburg hospital. Difference is time is less than 10 minutes. I expect any place in the southern section of TV would be similar.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Update --- Mapquest sucks. It does not recognize the exits to 466A, so the route to LRMC takes you all the way back to 466 and into Lady Lake. Don't know how much, but the route via 466A is much, much shorter and much, much less traffic.
Thanks all for your kind thoughts. Yes, we live near 466A, so the parmetics said only a mile difference either way. Again, great response time and great care at Leesburg. I've always had a great respect with people who deal with emergencies. I simply fall apart.
Chelsea: Glad things worked out. It's a scary situation when a loved one is experiencing problems and it's a medical emergency. For the newer Villages residents it is worth noting that it wasn't too many years ago that there was no TVRH and LRMC was a much smaller hospital and a call to 911 brought a Neighborhood Watch person in a pickup truck, who directed the ambulance (a paid for, privately owned ambulance to your home) and maybe a Volunteer Fireman from Oxford who may have only had basic First Aid training. This all changed when TV decided that to be a First Class Retirement Community, it needed a Hospital and a First Class Public Safety Department with well trained First Responders.
In my opinion, we are fortunate for this foresight as we now have a hospital with ever-increasing capabilities, and a Public Safety Department that is second to none, both in terms of Staff, Officers, Equipment and most importantly for an aging population, incredibly fast response times. There are many metropolitan areas in the US that can't come close to what we have in the EMS category. This is one of the best things that I have seen here in TV, as it has grown and as my neighbors, spouse and I get older, we thank God for this.
I am not a spokesperson for TV, but as a former EMT with a Volunteer Fire Department, I can appreciate the difference and know how important a fast response by a well trained, properly equipped person is, to a fire or medical emergency.
