It seems you think putting yourself in jeopardy is a better idea than just moving to the grass in dangerous spots where carts would not be able to see you beforehand. I was inches away from hitting that man, and will not put myself in jeopardy by moving into an opposing lane when there is no line of sight of what is coming toward me because an idiot insists on his “right” to stay in the roadway. You walkers who insist on staying in the roadway with carts who have to navigate blind curves and hills only need to be hit one time to change your life forever.

While I walk facing traffic on the MMPs most of the time, the exception is when I am approaching what will be a blind curve for oncoming cart traffic. Often in these situations there is no bail out room for the pedestrian on the left, due to plantings.
When I see this situation, I move across the MMP (look behind me first so I don't walk into a cart approaching from behind), and walk on the right side of the MMP until I am past the blind curve. If I can't see the carts coming at me, I know they can't see me either.

ALSO... When I am operating a cart and approaching a sharp right hand curve, and I can't see what is ahead of me on the MMP, I SLOW DOWN!!! There might be a pedestrian, or a runner, or a slow moving bicycle. SLOW DOWN if you can't see what's in the lane ahead of you.
Please.

The correct action in this scenario is for the cart to slow down or STOP so that they do not create a dangerous condition. Then pass when safe to do so.
Imagine how your life would change if you actually hit the pedestrian? Sued. Then financially bankrupt. Maybe even jail time.
Right of way doesn't even come into consideration when deliberate reckless actions cause injuries that could have easily been avoided.

Honestly, if I'm going around a right-hand bend then I'm hanging to my right side, close to the shrubs, in case some bozo is cutting the corner coming towards me. If I meet a pedestrian at just the wrong moment it could be close. It's a roll of the dice: do I anticipate a pedestrian or do I anticipate an oncoming cart in half my lane?

Of course that is what you were taught as a child, you're parents primary objective was keeping you safe - NOT - teaching you the rules of the road.

When the boys were little, they would hear a car coming & would say "Car coming, car coming" & dash off to the side. Now that they are twenty somethings they no longer yell out "Car coming" & rush off to the side. They both know how to drive & walk safely. But I'd assume they are aware of their surroundings & if an out of control car/bike/person came their way they'd scramble.

Yes

I've noticed the same in cars in general guys will yield more than women some will run you into a wall (it's MY LANE and NOT move over to the empty lane) BUT if you pass guys even though they are slower it's a drag race - egos I guess

Having said that, there have been times when a walker, facing the traffic, will play chicken and I will always give way to the stupid ones. Remember walkers........you will NOT be the victor when confronting a vehicle that will certainly hurt or kill you. Get our of the way!!!!!!!!

Please stop driving!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As a female I don't "swing" however I do pull over when approaching pedestrians:)

I work in a building where both men and women enter the front doors and the men always say hello or goodbye. The women look straight ahead as if I’m not even there. The men are much nicer and more polite.

I agree. And, when driving, if you let a man into traffic line, you will almost always get a thank you wave. With women, not so much.

Ropnrose 01-14-2024 08:45 AM

I take exception to your statement that "women hold their lane". I'm a woman that routinely drives on the MMP. Not only do I move over for a walker, I also slow down. When passing a bicycle, I slow down and give them the minimum 3' (usually more) wide clearance.

When they finally do go past us 90% have golf clubs on the back. When someone fails to yield for us in a round-about 90% have golf clubs in the back. We always maintain a 20 MPH speed, unless someone is behind us- then we up it to it's top speed of 21 or 22. I think the friendly people in The Villages are much friendlier than elsewhere. I also think the card-carrying assh0les in The Villages are much worse than elsewhere- with golfers being the worst. I understand that I can't draw a conclusion- I can only report my experience. Don't bother saying you are a golfer and don't act that way- I get it- you are in the 10%

Curious, where are the roundabouts that allow golf carts on them?

srswans 01-14-2024 09:11 AM

Yes - Slow Down

If I can’t do that due to another vehicle being in that other lane I slow down until that vehicle passes and then swing to the left to safely pass. I also will drive to the very right side of the road to allow trucks and other cars to safely pass people and bicyclists on their side of the road…

Agreed - carts/cars should move over and slow down.

I always give a wide berth and slow down on the MMP so the pedestrians have peace of mind that I see them and are yielding to them. Pedestrians give me a smile and a wave when I do this.

My husband & I have noticed something when walking on multi-modal paths.

First off I'll mention that we always walk on the left side (ie, into traffic), and that our observation only applies if there are no carts coming from behind us (fyi, if there are carts coming from both directions at the same time, we simply step off the path onto the grass, ceding the right of way).

So, when there is a cart coming at us (and no other carts, bikes, or walkers anywhere around), our observation is this: When MEN are driving the oncoming cart, they pull way over to their left, giving us wide berth which provides us with a comfortable safety buffer. On the other hand, WOMEN do not do this and instead (inexplicably) generally hold to their current lane on the right side of the path.

Suffice to say we don't understand this phenomenon, and if anyone does, we'd love to hear the reasoning. But in any case, we walkers would like to thank those cart drivers who swing wide left when approaching walkers, and we'd like to ask more (all) of you to please do the same (when you can). Thank you.

Female here and I always move way over for walkers when there is room to do so. When walking I have never noticed one gender being more courteous than the other when passing me.

There’s one on the golf cart path just before going under 501 from McClure to either Linden or to Magnolia plaza.
