A friend sent this to me. It was created in and used in WA state, however FL DMV has been using it has well. As we have had discussions on this site many times about the round abouts. Thought some of you would appreciate this. Allow 6-7 minutes for viewing.

This video doesn't apply to the Villages round a bouts. The ones here are too small to accommodate these rules . Additionally, there are new painted lines in some of the round a bouts that are contrary to the information in this video.

I found reading the page on Round-a-bouts in the Villages phone book to be required reading. Wish I read it on the first day of my visit and not the last.

This is an excellent video and a great companion to the locally produced brochure. I disagree with the comment that it does not apply to our Villages roundabouts. The rules of the road for roundabouts are common for all roundabouts even those in The Villages which have the painted lane restriction to enforce the inner lane use for 270 degree and U turns. The same messages would even be valuable in the UK where a roundabout is often nothing more than a white circle painted in the middle of the intersection.
This video would be a great handout at those Village orientation meetings.

I don't live in TV so I don't recall the rules for the roundabouts there. The traffic circles in TV are rather small though as talk host mentioned.

However, I disagree with the statement that the same rules are common to all roundabouts.

We have several rounabouts in the town that I live in and the rules aren't even consistent within our town! Here's one example, we have two dual lane roundabouts on the same road within a mile of each other. In the first roundabout, if you want to go left (make a 270 degree turn) you must use the inside lane only. In the second roundabout, if you want to go left (make a 270 degree turn) you can use either the inside or the outside lane. Therefore, in the second traffic circle, you have traffic crossing each other in ways that are prohibited in the first traffic circle.

The important thing is to pay attention to lane markings, make sure you get in the correct lane for where you are going, and always watch what other traffic is doing.

Both these guides concur with the rules posted in The Villages phonebook and indeed with Nationally and Globally accepted standards for navigating Roundabouts and Traffic Circles.

So far my searches online have produced no results for changes in these rules when navigating "smaller" roundabouts or more specifically "The Villages" roundabouts. I would be interested in knowing which local authority decreed that these rules do not apply to our roundabouts due to their size.

There are of course some roundabouts across the country where different rules do apply but these exceptions to the rule have pavement markings and or roadside signs so as not to cause confusion.

IMHO Follow Dept. of Transport guidelines unless you have absolute proof that they do not apply!

The Sumter County Guide is exceptionally well-done, especially for a government-issued item!

I was recently at a meeting with Lt. Wolfe, Sumter County Deputy. He indicated that citations are possible for ignoring the rules in the pamphlet.

That said, we don't know for absolute positive sure that Marion County's guidelines are the same, do we?

I agree with canna (sorry Jan), this video applies to TV, if you enter in the right lane you should make a right turn or go straight, enter from the left lane and your options are, go straight, turn left or U turn. Now that being said most people are not familiar with round abouts and you should always watch out for the other guy.

I agree that the video tells the proper way to use a roundabout. With the new lines painted on some of the Villages roundabouts that system is out the window.

BTW, how does one make a U turn in a roundabout.

One enters in the left lane and goes all the way around (180 degrees) and exits. Seems straight forward to me........

I didn't mean for this to turn into an issue....or an argument.

Some learn by watching and listening versus reading a brochure. However, I really just wanted to share the information I had been given.

The round abouts can be a little scary sometimes....especially in between shows at the Savannah Center!!!
