I'd like to think that this woman wanted to give the boy a treat but just didn't have the money to give him his luxury and her her luxury. So, possibly, in her mind she felt she had no choice. Stinks, but some people have very skewed thinking.

Regardless of the final outcome, I applaud OP for the act of kindness and generosity of spirit. Hopefully, this won't stop the rest of us from helping others when they are in need even if it means risking being conned and cheated.
