Adam Neusbaum at Adam’s Earth does dethatching. He has good equipment and does a great job. Phone 352 342-1384.

Now is a good time to do it or have it done, fast recovery so less weeds. On Empire zoysia, it suggests every 4 years. I did my own. You can rent the machine. I bought one of the inexpensive electric ones for like $100. The hard part, there is no way the catcher that comes with it is of any use as it is way too small. Out of my 5,000 sq foot lawn I removed like 12 or 15 of those large heavy paper bags sold for garden waste. The bags were packed down to get more in each bag.

For St Augustine, since it spreads by above ground runners, I will pull out a lot of live grass.

Good morning, I did my zoysia myself last August, rented a true vertical mower from Home Depot, think it was less than $100. It did a great job and took the worst lawn in the Villages to a very nice lawn this spring. I have a pickup to move the machine, it is very heavy, and you'll need to rent ramps as well, and would be happy to help you if you decide to take this on yourself.

Also used Adam’s Earth. We have a large corner lot and they did a great job.

You know what they meant. Good grief.

Plus, the manual version is called a “thatching rake”.

Thatching.
Sorry, no one will touch that...Won't happen.
You have St Augstine.
It will propogate by sending Stollons over the top of soil.
If you want to rip the grass entirely out of the ground.
Thatch away!!!!

Buy a wire rake and slowly pick away at the worst spots.
Next, buy fertilizer, hand sprinkle those areas.

Bare spots, put down a 50/50 mix of top soil and cow poop (both at Lowes).
My grass is erupting, the brown spots are due to the drought, not thatch.

Thatching is a Northern thing usually done on Bermuda grass.

Regards
