Exactly right. And depending on the brand of the sensor, some can take up to 4 minutes (once covered) before they activate. Others activate almost immediately. This is to prevent nuisance trips when it’s cloudy during the day.

I’ve literally replaced dozens of these for people, and I learned early on, to NOT wrap the tape around the entire post, especially in the summer. You end up pulling off paint from the post :)

I’ve fashioned a pvc pipe cap and bungee cord for testing purposes.

And for those who have suggested to simply use a light bulb with a built in sensor.......

IF the sensor on the post is NOT working, then simply replacing your bulb with built in sensor WILL NOT WORK !!!!

Why ? Because IF the pole sensor is defective, there will be no current supplied to ANY bulb that is placed in the fixture......
