It has spread. There are several homes in our southern veranda neighborhood, and throughout our village with them. They change colors for various holidays throughout the year. You can’t even tell they’re there during the day. They don’t bother us, and we even considered them just for Christmas and a couple other major holidays but we found out they aren’t very reliable, and if they do die the only way to replace them under warranty is to send them back to the manufacturer. After spending upwards of a grand or two for installation that would be crazy because they’d need to be reinstalled again, so instead we put color changing bulbs in our outdoor light fixtures. We can easily change the bulbs ourselves if one burns out, plus they’re very subtle at night. They can all sync together or be individually controlled (remote control or app on phone), and can be set for different holidays or just soft/warm white or whatever color you want, or soft flickering like a flame. They can be set on a timer so we have ours shut off at 10pm except for the lantern on the post which of course has the electric eye and is on all night. Right now we have them on the Spring/Easter setting, which rotates through several colors you’d see in Spring flowers. We love them and so do our neighbors.

Just what I need; more stuff to buy to keep up with the Jone's. And I thought painted driveways and garage floors was extravagant.

Coated driveways and garage floors isn't extravagant IMO. It helps protect the concrete and provide easy clean up when working in the garage for me. I have had the garage floor done in three houses. Two in CO and this one in Florida.

Colorado, it kept the concrete from being damaged by the magchloride they would put on the roads in the winter. Helps in cleanup from the occasional spill of fluids and dry chemicals. There is a purpose besides "just looking nice". I would not have coated the driveway and garage just for atheistic purposes.

I guess some like oil stained driveways and garage floors. Not my kind of art work.

I've bought & sold 100's of houses. Lived in at last 20, including 5 in Florida.

I never saw a painted driveway or garage floor, until I came to The Villages.

The lights are just over the top, tacky. I've never seen them anywhere else, other than in trailer parks or a carnival.

I guess some folks appreciate the Audrey Hepburn look ... some want to look like Katie Perry, Lady Gaga or Miley Cyrus.

5 neighborhoods and 15 years we have never noticed oil or stains on naked driveways. Friends just had their driveway done for $10,000, still get tire marks a color debris from roof. Myself I find many deco driveways tacky. At least the lights you can turn off. Driveway is forever

Time to consider planting editable produce on our lawns. Offer the complainers a bushel of veggies. Would love to see reaction to that. Oh and noise pollution from wind chimes or nighttime barking dogs.
What ever happen to asking the neighbor to shut them off at say.9 pm. So many other things to be concerned about in this day and time.Enjoy the pretty color. Know around here most pay no attention to rules. Sad state of affairs.

merrymini 04-14-2025 10:30 AM

Tacky and tasteless.

I agree. Wind chimes and barking dogs are noise pollution. Lights are not.

I have a neighbor that has all sorts of plastic and cement animals in her yard. They are so tacky- deers and rabbits etc. I thought yard art was forbidden?

I've seen a few folks on here not a fan about the permanent house lights. I actually love them but not of fan of the crazy strobing or fast movement and not too bright.

My take on it it…. Just my 2 Cents.

We’re in The Villages, right? This is our time to enjoy what life we have left, to make the most of it. Sports, family, celebrating our country – that's what it's all about.

And those lights...They just add to the fun. Light up your house in your favorite team's colors for game day. Christmas, 4th of July, Mardi Gras, New Years etc.
And the grandkids absolutely love them.

I put them on my place, my uncle's, and my mom and stepfather houses. I can't tell you how many people walking or driving by ask if I can get them installed on their houses too!

So, I partnered with a company, that will install them with my assistance and personally guide each homeowner and show them how to control the brightness, change the color patterns, set the timers, and how to keep the movement subtle.

When nothing special's going on, I just light up the corners in a dark blue. I like the way it looks, and honestly, I think it adds a little security. Makes the place look like it's got a system, you know? Like, 'they probably have cameras too, I'm not messing with that house.'

Life's short, right? We're here to enjoy it.

I added a few pictures. If you're curious about those lights, and want them installed, just give me a holler for details.

Best Regards to all if you like them or not ;-)

It's a time to enjoy life, but not at the expense of your neighbors.

I fail to see how installing lights that are likely to offend your neighbors and are prohibited by Deed Restrictions, could possible add to anyone's "fun".

If you need multi-colored flashing lights to have any fun in your life, close your window shades and do whatever you wish, in the comfort and privacy of your own home ... the outside of your home, isn't just yours ... it's protected & limited for the benefit of all of us.

They only “benefit” the neighbors because they have to look a them from across the street all the time. How do you “benefit” when you’re siting inside the house?? Same with wind chimes and all the other stuff outside of your home we get to hear and look at while your inside the home. Different perspective, why not put crazy colored lights or have a fan blowing on a wind chime inside the house?

Apparently you’ve missed the many comments stating there’s no deed restriction for these lights, and no ARC approval needed either.

I'm sure if you searched TOTV, you'd find comments insisting the World is Flat.

You must have missed the 10,000000 words published and $100,000's of dollars spent, because folks believe "White Crosses" are allowed per the Deed Restrictions.

Alterations to the exterior of a home are prohibited by the Deed Restrictions of most every community in The Villages.

Everyone seems to understand you can't just paint your home "magenta" ... but it's ok to change the color of your home, using LED lights? It defies logic.

However until the deed restrictions that you and every resident signed are changed to your satisfaction. Or when you have dinner at developers table to voice your concerns demanding changes.

It the age old statement, if one isn’t happy with the definition of rules, wait for a change, make the change, or live with it. So maybe you can approach the developer to make specific changes to your benefit

It’s pretty common some are unhappy with the life choices of others. But isn’t that why many choose to live in US, life choices are still a freedom….. for some.

My deed restrictions do not address "alterations". They address "structural alterations", "additions", and "repainting". I would suggest that you ask the ARC office and the deed compliance office about this because they are responsible for actually enforcing the deed restrictions. I have done this, and they told me that an ARC application was not required for undereave lighting changes. They seemed very familiar with the issue.

We already have two neighbors with similar on their pool cages (even when not using the pool) - hideous.

And there are numerous carts looking more like a fairground that a mode of transport.

Must be getting old - I'm sure I'd have loved both ten years ago :-)

"Hideous" is a good word for it.

As for liking it when you were younger? I'm not sure how old you are now, but I grew out of the clown cars & carnival decorations, when I was 15-16.

It's like some of the automobiles & motorcycles in The Villages and everywhere else. I'm not sure who ever came up with the theory that "loud exhausts" make you "cool". All they really say are: "look at me, trying to be cool/young/obnoxious" (take your pick).

We have a home in our village that has these in the eaves. They are on every night. The owner has them set to burn very dim and this subtle effect is actually nice. I'm saying this as someone who hates tacky things.

Many would disagree as to what's "tacky".

Agree, but don't forget what's been getting worse over the years for noise pollution that nobody seems recognize or ignore.
That's loud cars/cycles driving down our streets and highways 24 hrs. a day that are so loud it rattles our windows.

These people refuse to except the fact they are violating peoples privacy through
noise pollution.

A lot of houses down south are installing the led lights that change color. Beware though that many of these lights you can buy on Amazon like a 200 light pack with remote control, the lights are made overseas and can go out or stop functioning after a few months. A return to Amazon can sometimes get your money back if you are a regular Amazon customer. The pain of removing the lights with stickum pads is messy too. If the lights are legal, I would suggest going with a company that has a 3 year or more warranty for lights going out.

Calisport 05-29-2025 09:44 PM

How long have you had your lights?

Just wondering if your LED lights are all working and how long you have had them?
I installed some LED lights 200 lights from overseas. They lasted 3 months and eventually most of the lights stopped working.
Returned the lights. Wondering if there is a company that sells reliable led lights?
I preferred the blue violet lights at low settings only among all the colors. I think they can look classy at a low light setting.

Carnival is one of the few who agree.

This is probably the first time I've seen "classy" and "blue-violet LED" in the same sentence.
