Default Manufactured Home Kitchens

We are snowbirds who have decided it is time to buy a manufactured home instead of renting for 3months and shelling out the $10,000+ a yr to pay someone elses's mortgage My question is, all the MH I see online have those funky dated creme cabinets with the gold edging. The whole place can be completely updated and then...........there are those cabinets

Has anyone tried to reface them, if so was it costly. More importantly has anyone just painted them? I realize they are some kind of laminate, but couldn't you just prime them first? Thanks for any advise

Default Kitchen Cabinets

That's my problem with the manufactured homes, too. I have seen some, though, that had nice kitchens.

I'm sure you could do something to fix them up that wouldn't cost too much.

pr1234,

You are so right about those yukky cream colored cabinets. I have them in my manufactured home and got an estimate from a professional on painting them. I cant remember the price but it was totally outrageous and Im sure my jaw dropped when he gave me the estimate. I talked to a friend who has flipped a few houses and she told me that it would not be difficult to paint them myself. She told me they would have to be primed first before repainted.
I think Im going to give it a try on my next trip down. They cant get any worse then they are now and it will probably be a huge improvement.

Ill let you know how they come out.

I have seen quite a few manufactured homes that do have updated kitchens and they look great! Have you checked them out online? The prices for some beautifully updated manufactured homes are surprisingly low right now!

We had our cabinets painted several years ago, and they have been fine. A neighbor did her own and again they turned out well and have lasted. We also had all the "woodwork" painted. The painters have said that you can paint anything. It has been seven or eight years.

Welcome!

We shipped our bikes down in January and used them every other day during the three months we stayed this past winter.

Now we don't have bikes in Norcal and got tired of looking thru Craig's list for used ones yesterday and went to two bike stores to buy bikes and they were both outa business!

PS: The Avatar pic is from our Tuscany Bike Tour we did in Oct 07

Smile Kitchen Cupboards

We live in a manufactured home in Silver Lake and my husband did our cupboards over. If you would be interested in seeing mine let me know. They turned out wonderful. He also put in an island and more drawers. Everyone loves it. He also put in new counter tops and a new laminate floor. It is every bit as nice as the kitchens on the other side and he did not spend thousands of dollars.

Where did you ride in TV?

Judy Lou!

You called them "cupboards" instead of cabinets like all of us Ohioans do. Are you from the Midwest?

I have heard that you can remove the doors and replace them. (Thus getting rid of the "French Provincial groove on the door) I imagine that white doors would be the easiest but I see people on HGTV doing a wood colored paint on the cabinets...(cupboards) A friend who owns and rents properties says that the best thing is to finish them with several layers of acrylic so the paint doesn't chip.

My daughters kitchen cupboards need a facelift. I keep encouraging her to try to paint them. Also, Lowes and home depot have generic cabinets that don't break the bank. (We bought two very nice ones for the laundry room for less that $200 each) I find all cabinets WAY overpriced. They are just wood boxes and should not cost more than much more intricately made furniture. Our Camellia came with "not great" cabinets. There is a big difference in the quality of cabinets of already built spec homes. Most have nice cabinets.

I am looking for some door pulls for our cabinets and can't decide what looks best with the "beach cottagy" decor. Probably simple silver since all the light fixtures are silver and brass is out right now.

P.S. My female ancestors also called closets "cupboards". I am German descent.

My mother (and grandmother) called them cupboards as well. I wonder if they made the shift to cabinets when pantries went out of vogue int he 60s - 70s.

Oh well, enough of a hijack!

If you are looked for knobs, pulls, etc - go to myknobs.com to get ideas.

They have everything you can think of and much you would never have imagined. They can be pricey - so once you know what you want, I'd see if I could find a look alike at Lowe's or HD,

PR1234,

Hubby cant ruin your fun in TV. It doesnt matter what you live in, when your in The Villages you will have fun! Im in a manufactured home and Im barely there long enough to do anything but grab a bite to eat and sleep. Honestly, the house doesnt matter, just get out and enjoy yourself, that is the big attraction in TV. THE LIFESTYLE!

Peazoup, a member here, had here cabinets repainted by a professional painter and they looked brand new. Ask her next time she appears online or message her from here.

We folks of German extractions also had wardrobes or presses as bedroom furniture to hold clothing items.
